About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Succeed at Everything

ABOUT ME

I'm an undergrad student at Oberlin College set to graduate in the spring of this year (2013). I study computer science, mathematics, and East Asian studies (specifically Japanese), but I try to learn about pretty much everything. I do a lot of writing, both as code and as prose, and I love reading. I'm a little quiet usually when I first meet people, but I warm up quickly, and I love having good conversations. I am one of those people who eat and sleep minimally in order to fit more stuff in the rest of the day; a lot of the time, that's work, but I don't mind kicking back and socializing when I get the chance.

PHILOSOPHY

I was asked once, "Would you rather have a happy life or an interesting one?" The answer is the latter, hands down. While I wouldn't consider myself an unhappy person, life is so much more fascinating when you aren't just satisfied with the way that things are.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: I listen to a lot of jazz-electronica, like Ratatat, RJ-D2, Amon Tobin, etc. I also am currently obsessed with the Balkan jazz/hip-hop fusion group Balkan Beat Box. In general, I like rock and jazz influenced things (my school has a great jazz conservatory, so it grew a lot on me in recent years). I will listen to pretty much anything, but I don't particularly like the American country genre.

Movies: I don't really watch movies, but the few I have and enjoyed would include Monty Python movies, Ocean's Eleven, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and I'm sure several more that I am forgetting. I do watch a lot of television shows, thanks to Netflix, so my favorites there include Arrested Development, 30 Rock, South Park, Archer, Eureka, and Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Most of what I have read is classic fiction, but I also enjoy thrillers, scifi and fantasy. My favorite books are East of Eden (Steinbeck), Catch-22 (Heller), To Kill a Mockingbird (Lee) and All the King's Men (Warren). I recently read the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series and the Hunger Games series, which were both very good.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The amazing sight I'm going to share is the line of people camping out in a line stretching across campus in chilly fall weather, all waiting for the art museum to rent them a masterpiece to keep in their dorm room.

Teach, Learn, Share

I work tech support part time, so I can teach computer skills, from beginner to advanced. I also am a pretty decent violin and guitar teacher: I was a private tutor for three years. I like learning and sharing for just about everything.
