"Only by going alone in silence, without baggage, can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness. All other travel is mere dust and hotels and baggage and chatter." - John Muir
Personal File | Who is Kalevi Kurronen
I was born and grew up in Colorado and Oregon. I'm an outdoor, wine drinking hippie. I love space and the universe. And with that view I've realized how small we are as individuals. How special we are, how special Earth is.
I grew up in an active family, so we were always skiing, biking, doing something fun. I went for a walk one day when I was 15 years old, took a wrong turn and ended up in Finland. I looked around, loved what I saw, so I stayed for some high school and all of my university. I missed the opportunity to see what America has to offer, so I went back... Just as I got back, I had an opportunity to play baseball in Liege, so I packed my 2 airline size approved bags and a carry on and left... again. I joined the U.S. Air Force from there. After getting out I moved back to Finland for my MSc degree and will be traveling and working on that until the end of the year.
I believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and the Church of Baseball. - "Bull Durham" A great line from a great movie about my passion.

My Involvement | How am involved the Couchsurfing Project?I've been around CS for a little while now, if its not by hosting or meeting up with travelers, I've always tried to spread the word as much as possible.
I believe CS is great, great for travel, great for culture, great for life. Meeting as many travelers, or fellow CSers, is a great way to strengthen the community.
My Travels with the CS Project | A 3,000 mile road trip from Portland, through Mammoth Lake, Lake Tahoe, LA- California. We also went to Vegas, the Grand Canyon and everywhere in between. One of the best parts of the trip was meeting new people, local people from couch surfing that showed us around.
Meetup and hosted while in Belgium.
Visited with a wide range of CSers in Belgium and Portland. I was in the Isle of Man hosted by a great Couchsurfing family.
While in San Antonio, noticing there was no CS Community, I created a group that now has over 150 members and monthly meetups are getting more and more popular! :)
While back to the US, I had so many great hosts in San Antonio and Austin, TX!!
In Vaasa, the CS community is small but very tight. Very nice people.
Hosted by Lynn(n), Ian and Jeff and Malta. They bettered myself, how can you go wrong with that?
Have been hosting like crazy here in Helsinki depending on school schedules and all.
I went on a 6,000 mile road trip from Portland, Oregon to Columbia, South Carolina. Camped and CSed it the whole way through.
Summer of 2011, hitch hiked around the Balkans with a fellow CSer.
Hosted 100s and meet so many great CSers in Helsinki during university. They have inspired and encouraged me to learn and experience life.
We only live once⦠| I love to see the finer things in life, living life to the fullest. I drink the best beer, go to the great concerts, travel the world and meet some amazing people. Almost anything has something interesting to offer. (PS, that lifestyle tends to leave you broke and lost).
â¦my personal philosophy keeps adapting⦠| We might as well live 100% today for tomorrow we might be dead... thus I don't have a lot of plans, I'm very spur or the moment if I can be...
The old philosophy has developed over time⦠I wish I was not always on the road so much, the friendships I have created are valuable. I wish I had more time and patience to relax and enjoy them.
The Arts⦠| Almost all kinds of music is great... you won't find any death rock and death music cds in my collection though. I wish I had some time to read books. I would like to read the Art of War. I would like to read some interesting biographies also.
I found myself becoming a Star Trek fan, the original and The New Generation back when I lived in Mikkeli, FI. Not a lot of options in English tv programming that late at night.
The Simpsons, Amazing Race, Family Guy, Kenny vs Spenny, BONES and other such programs are always worth watching.
The people in my life | International people pretty much rock my world. Anyone with cool stories, and almost everyone has something to contribute to a conversation.
My thoughts on something like the CS Project⦠| We all need great friends and we're always gonna need some help, advice or just someone to point us in the right direction. We're all here because we love to travel and those who travel are a pretty special group of people. In the end, we're all the same. We think the same, we find the same pleasures out of life. We're a family. To help or be helped is what we're all here for.
A few of my finer moments in life⦠| New Years in Spain, New Years in the Red Square and in Finland and at the Oregon beaches and mountains. I've skied in the Alps, the Rockies of Colorado and in Oregon. I've swam in Costa Rica and Hawaii. Drank fine Scottish whiskey in an old Scottish bar. I've seen the Northern Lights in Levi, Finland. I watched a great sunrise over the Paris skyline, while standing on a baseball field waiting for my game to start. I have tasted love. Been through military Basic Training, fired a machine gun and lived in Oklahoma and Texas. Started my own little business, a pub crawl in Vaasa and now one in Helsinki. I lived in Nicaragua and studied surfers there for a few months (Thanks to CS), drove across America (a couple of times), off to the Balkans for a month, then camping and working in the Rocky Mountains (gonna try to finish my thesis too *couch couch*)... hoping the list grows longer!
Like I said, we're a family... all the travelers need a hand or someone to talk to.
Nature and the process of life that inhabits it. Earth, the stars, and imagining what's out there. I love to sit around campfires in the mountains with friends and family. I love culture. I love it just as much as nature and life.
