About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To look deep into the smallest places of the world and find their beauty.

ABOUT ME

If my friend were writing this, she'd probably say: "Katie is really smart. Sometimes I don't understand what she's talking about. When she's not talking about science, though, it's fun! She loves to go out for food and drinks. She's really funny, and always makes me laugh. She laughs a lot, too. Oh my god, her laugh is amazing! Also, she's really genuine, and cares deeply about the world. She loves sharing new ideas with people. When she has something fascinating to share with you, you WILL hear about it. And she's always so interested in learning new ways to look at the world, so she'll probably ask you tons of questions."

PHILOSOPHY

I live because I believe that there are amazing truths to be realized. These truths are tantalizing enough that they are nearly always guiding my actions. I want to know why humans behave the way they do. I want understand through experience that time is not linear. I'd like to figure out what's going on in all those other dimensions that modern physics insists exist.

Interests

SCIENCE!! Quantum physics and its implications on consciousness. Chemistry and Biology, and just everything about how the world works.
Education. I think about how best to convey information, processes, knowledge, skills...how best to teach.
Animals :) I love talking to whales, dolphins, cats, dogs, and bugs.

Music, Movies, and Books

The Fountain is an absolutely amazing movie. Everyone I know who has watched it, has watched it multiple times.
The Great Dictator Speech by Charlie Chaplin set to Inception's Time soundtrack is an amazing piece.
Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman has provided me a method of watching my brain make decisions. My life is greatly improved by this book :)

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Driving down the hill from a client's house, the view onto the ocean just took my breath away. I've lived near the ocean my whole life and have never seen it framed so beautifully. The trees lining the street I was on, the road leading all the way down the hill, and then...ocean :)
Blue whales! Oh my gosh, in October 2010, I went on a whale watching trip, and we saw 22 blue whales, and one of them came right up to our boat and I was literally 5 feet away from him! I don't know how to describe my reaction, but "severely joyful physiological massive release" kinda captures it. I was crying (with my voice and my eyes), and my legs gave out. Ain't nothing like being with a blue whale :)

Teach, Learn, Share

There's this ratatouille recipe that I really like and am able to cook successfully.
I have a whole bunch of books that I would love to share with people who are looking for some attention-grabbing non-fiction.
I've learned a lot about how to learn, and I love sharing those resources with people (e.g. Khan Academy).
