One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

While I was snorkeling at the black rock in Maui last year a huge sea turtle came up to me from between the rocks and hung out with me on the surface for at least 5 minutes. It came within inches of me as I slowly made way for it to go out to sea, watching me the whole time and mirroring my moves. I felt like the turtle was staring into my soul and its eyes looked wise and old. If there is such a thing as a spirit animal, I believe that that turtle was mine.

As a part of the 2010 international geobiology class we journeyed to the Boars tooth in wyoming to learn the rudiments of paleontology. Our instructors brought us to a ridge, split us into teams, and told us to chart the story that the rocks told. We started at the bottom and worked our way up the ridge. Sandstone gave way to shale, and then above that we suddenly came upon fossils of clams and it dawned on us that it was once a lake. Above that the stones tasted salty and as we climbed we saw how the level of lake changed over time. When we finally reached the top we sat atop massive stromatolite fossils while enjoying the most incredible view (geologically) that I have ever seen -- the guts of an ancient volcano to my right, a swollen magma chamber in front, dry lake beds (playas) here and there, and the snow covered tetons in the background. The drama of that moment totally blew my mind.
