Sobre mí

CURRENT MISSION

Heading to Hawaii after finishing my contract in March

ABOUT ME

I'm a U.S. SWF, 37, who quit her OK-paying job to take a lower-paying gig in South Korea. I participated in BUNAC after college and worked and lived in London. I had a blast. Went home. Spent the next 12 years trying to figure out what I wanted in a career, did the 9 to 5, and accumulated consumer debt, trying to find happiness (or trying to buy happiness?), or at least some satisfaction. Never wanted kids, and had a hard time finding someone who felt the same way who I also wanted to be with. I always wanted to go overseas again, but didn't want to teach. Every few months I'd go online and dream of travelling and living overseas again. Finally, I found a writing/editing position through a recruiter and here I am! The vague plan is to stay here until I pay off my debt and save enough to do some long-term travelling in Asia, and then find a job in another part of the world, save money and travel all over again. I don't plan on going back "home" for a while...until I see what I want to see. I think your 30s is a great time to live abroad. I'm glad I had those dozen years to know without a doubt how I DON'T want to live. I learned that living my life on my own terms is more important than a building a conventional career, and in the end, towing the line is no more secure than taking off to live in Asia. After all, spouses leave, kids grow up to be jerks, jobs can be lost. Now I'm more accepting of who I am and what I can and cannot do, and more importantly, what I will and will not do. I think living the mainstream grind has made me appreciate what an awesome opportunity working in Korea is. I know there will be bumps on the road--and I also know they won't be the end of the world. Many of my 30-something friends are giving birth to their children now. I'm giving birth to a new life as well--my own.

PHILOSOPHY

Make the world a better place. Learn. Don't assume. Love (the verb).

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I CouchSurfed with my cousin in England, after I broke up with my boyfriend. Her friend, in turn, offered me her couch in Scotland. This was over ten years ago. I think joining this organization will pay back their kindness, by passing their hospitality along.

Travel (duh), reading, eating ice cream, having fun.

My friends might say my moving to South Korea is pretty amazing.

Enseña, aprende, comparte

I want to learn Spanish one of these days. Also interested in sustainable living.
