About Me

I used to travel a lot, but I've settled in Central Kentucky for now. I grew up in Northeast Ohio, twenty miles east of Cleveland along Lake Erie. I studied at Kent State to be a community organizer, and I have now become an attorney. In between those jobs, I taught English in Dresden, Prague, and Istanbul, and I worked on farms in Slovenia, New Mexico, Iowa and New Hampshire.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm on Couchsurfing to meet international travelers exploring the United States so that I can give back the hospitality that I was given when I travelled abroad. I also want to share a beautiful part of America - Central Kentucky - with travelers looking to experience the people and land of the American Heartland.

I've been on Couchsurfing since '07, but I never really used it when I was traveling. I mostly stayed in hostels, and then later, I stayed with friends and family. But now I finally have a house and a spare bedroom, so I am excited to be able to host.

Music, Movies, and Books

My favorite writers are: Tim O'Brien, Cormac McCarthy, Per Peterson, Franz Kafka, Milan Kundera, Orhan Pamuk, Italo Calvino, Jorge Luis Borges, and Kurt Vonnegut. Peterson is probably my favorite.

Movies: The Searchers, Lawrence of Arabia, Field of Dreams, Blade Runner, The Seventh Seal, and The Burbs. As far as TV, I like the X-Files and Twin Peaks, otherwise, I don't really watch TV shows.

The easiest way to do this is my favorite albums (in about this order): Springsteen "Born to Run," Dylan "Blood on the Tracks," Jeff Buckley "Grace," Beirut "Gulag Orkestar," and U2 "Unforgettable Fire."

I love Cleveland sports teams too: the Indians, Cavaliers, and Brown.

What I Can Share with Hosts

It depends when you come to visit. I can always prepare dinner, usually with ingredients from local farms. All the meat I cook is local, and so are most of the veggies. I'll probably bake. I have a beautiful view of the Kentucky River valley in my backyard that you can enjoy and I live next to one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Kentucky, which is more like a park. I'm five minutes from downtown Frankfort and there is plenty to explore for an entire day (history museums, the Capitol, shops, parks, and a distillery), and everything is very walkable.

If you come on the weekend, I can take you around to different parts of Kentucky and we can go kayaking or hiking - it depends what you like. Maybe we can explore some farms and definitely we can sample bourbon! There are dozens of distilleries in Central Kentucky, with a couple here in Frankfort.

If you're not driving, please try to make your way to Lexington and I can pick you up after work. Greyhound stops there (it also stops in Frankfort). Lexington also has an Airport. I can also go to Louisville (which has MegaBus), but that is farther away for me. I could also pick up in Cincinnati, but that is even farther.

If you're looking for big city excitement, this probably isn't the place for you. This is more quiet and low key, but very beautiful and relaxing. I recommend a 2-3 day stay; overnight is fine.
