About Me

I love my city and but realise that it's not easy to explore as a tourist. I love life and try to share the happiness where I can.

I travel a lot. I also get a lot of Couchsurfing requests. PLEASE DO NOT SEND ME COUCH REQUESTS MORE THAN 1 WEEK IN ADVANCE. Last minute requests are fine, though if they're very last minute I might not see them in time, though you're welcome to try :)

Please READ MY PROFILE, and the my home section before sending me a request. You stand a better chance of being hosted by me if you have a real profile picture, write a sincere request, have hosted other couchsurfers and have references. If you don't have references, please consider getting verified / send me a link to your Facebook/ Linked in Profile. If you are coming with a friend, I suggest that they have a Couchsurfing profile too.

simple living, higher thinking

to wander, to learn, to explore
to need less and give more
to develop spiritually
to spread the love
to laugh often
to connect with like-minded souls
to taste different cultures and bask in new experiences while eating exotic foods and drinking sweet nectar en route...

Love, learn, laugh ;)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

To build up my travel karma :) I like to travel by meeting locals. I've hosted a dozens of surfers so far, met many for drinks, and CS events. I'm passionate about Mzansi (South Africa), and love to share my passion about my amazing country and its people.

As a guest, I like to learn from my hosts... your culture, your food, your music, your politics, your favourite local spaces & places :)

WANT ME TO HOST YOU? Say 'Hi Mzansigirl' and mention in your request that you'd like to cook me a dish from your home country. If you're a less than average cook, wine, cheese or good coffee is always welcome :)

Met, hosted and surfed through CS. I've crashed on many a couch, floor, patio, mattress, tree-house, tipi, mud hut, car, even pitched my tent in a few backyards...

Best CS experience: ooh, there have been lots...
*Best - all the friends I've made through CS
*Bushfire music festival in Swaziland
*being hosted by a food and wine guide in Barcelona
*marching against xenophobia with CSers through Hillbrow, of the roughest parts of town toyi-toying and *vuvuzela-ing in the spirit of unity!
*meeting CS friends 5 years after we'd met in Johannesburg at the wedding of 2 couchsurfing friends in India

Hosted... 100 + people from 40+ countries
Surfed: Mauritius, Maputo, Barcelona, Granada, Amsterdam, Mumbai, Cape Town, Atlanta, New York, Nairobi
Organised heaps of Joburg meet-ups as former ambassador of CS South Africa community.

If you're going to be in Joburg a for a few weeks/months, we have a active local CS WhatsApp group and a CS Joburg hiking group, that I could add you to.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies: Too many... Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Amelie, Y tu Mama Tambien, District 9, Spirited Away, Juno, Memento, Goodwill Hunting, The Motorcycle Diaries.

Music - too much to list, very eclectic. Everything from hip-hop, jazz and world music to reggae, rock, indie, ska, and everything in between. I love listening to music from all over the world, stuff we wouldn't ordinarily find on SA radio waves. I'm a big fan of world music and traditional instruments. I LOVE LIVE MUSIC and supporting local bands. A few favourites: The Brother Moves On, BCUC, Nakhane, Manu Chau, Bob Dylan, Mafikizolo, Hugh Masekela, Brenda Fassie, Ali Farka Toure, Nina Simone, Miriam Makeba, Kings of Leon, Ben Harper, Cake, Lee Scratch Perry, Thievery Corporation...

Books: The Wonder Safaris, The Kite Runner, The Prophet, The Drifters, Brave New World, The Alchemist, The Little Princess, The Little Prince, The Wind Up Bird Chronicle, White Tiger, Shantaram

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Lucky for me, I've had many amazing experiences, though I'll mention two... you can ask me about the others ;)

*The Sardine Run, Kwazulu Natal South Coast, South Africa :
A truly amazing morning! Sipping my morning coffee while staring out into the intoxicating Indian ocean, I noticed that the sea was thriving with activity. The Sardine Run - the largest shoal on earth had arrived to Umtentweni beach... dozens of sharks jumping out of the water in full breach, hundreds of Cape gannets diving, beaks spearing into the sardine-abundant ocean, schools of dolphins taking advantage of the feeding frenzy, whales breaching in the horizon.... amazing! Nature at her best :)

Bulungula , an eco-friendly paradise in my favourite part of the world, the Wild Coast, Eastern Cape, South Africa:
I'm sitting on a sand dune with the Transkei sun rising on the ocean as the full moon sets over a dune. As dolphins are play in the wild waves, cows roam freely on the beach... I feel privileged to be here. This is Bulungula, a little Xhosa village, difficult to find on a map, difficult to get to, yet truly special. I love this place for its simplicity, sustainability, natural beauty and the indescribable sense of peace that I get when I'm there. It's my inspiration :)

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you how to balance pineapples on your head if you teach me your favourite recipe from your country :) I'm very knowledgeable about backpacker and budget travel in SA.

I love Johannesburg and can show you what makes it so special to me. If you want to walk this city, find its coolest bars and art galleries, the best local live music acts... then we will get along just fine :) I have maps, guides and a wealth of local knowledge. It's kind of what I do now - share the love for my amazing country.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I love cooking, sharing my culture, travel experiences, and introduce you to Joburg's kickass live music & arts scene.
