About Me

saving the world

I am horrible at updating this page (last time was 2011), accepting friend requests, etc., but am slowly trying to catch up..... that being said, feel free to read on!

always eager to meet new people and try new things... i have spent the past few years since graduating from college traveling around the country and world, mostly working with local NGOs... i'm passionate about social justice issues, and have spent the past few years volunteering/working on issues relating to criminal justice, women/youth rights, fair trade, indigenous rights, and improving intergroup relations/peace and conflict studies. i love to constantly learn, especially about other people's cultures... back in school for the time being, studying social psychology (intergroup relations, peace and violence, international affairs, etc.), but i'm constantly looking for new ways to escape for trips abroad, and in the meantime, have the CS community here to keep me happy/ bring the rest of the world to me!

"if your knees aren't green by the end of the day, you ought to seriously re-examine your life." Calvin and Hobbes

... and, i think this quote sums up my travel philosophy pretty well:

"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness -- all foes to real understanding. Likewise, tolerance or broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in our little corner of the earth all one's lifetime." - Mark Twain

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

i've been really active in meeting up with, surfing, hosting, or traveling with other CSers since i joined in 2006... whenever i've found myself abroad in one spot for a while, i usually try to help plan activities.

my experiences in the U.S. were not much for a while- no matter how hard i tried, never could attract surfers to west texas or western mass. ;) now that i'm in NYC, i've organized lots of events/meetups over the past year.

i have gone to meetups, couchsurfed, and traveled with CSers in Central and South America, Australia, India, etc. for the last 4-6 years.

I'm in grad school now, unfortunately, and not able to travel as much, but I'm thankful that i have CS to bring people (both international and from the US) to me!

i'm a pretty big tomboy. i like being outdoors, photography, live music, dance, theater, arts, documentaries/filmmaking, air/space...

i'm addicted to adrenaline rushes (skydiving, motorcycles, etc.)... :)

and of course, like everyone on this site, love to meet new people, learn about new cultures, etc. i am always up for a spontaneous adventure, and am taking advantage of being back in school to travel as much as I can before having to get a real job.

Music, Movies & Books

i love, love love any kind of live music.. (except country). probably my favorite thing to do is go catch a live show. some of my favorites are u2, rem, green day, rhcp, dmb, matchbox 20, classic rock, oldies, 80s, jazz and blues.

books- 1984, davinci code, harry potter, calvin and hobbes, where the red fern grows, the interpreter of maladies, a separate peace, ender's game, the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, etc.

movies- shawshank redemption, crash, slumdog millionaire, when harry met sally, memento, forrest gump, anne of green gables, american beauty, saved!, moulin rouge

One Amazing Thing I've Done

i'm pretty amazed by everything i get to do when i travel... BUT, if i had to choose a few of my favorites so far...

rafting and hiking in the himalayas

8 day cruise in the galapagos

hiking and swimming through the deep jungle of the amazon

walking on glaciers in alaska

Teach, Learn, Share

probably the only more formal thing I can teach is English, but I'm willing to help provide advice on any of the places i've lived in and/or visited.. as well as finding (free placement) international volunteer opportunities (i've accumulated a large database over the years).

Countries I've Visited

Argentina, Canada, Chile, China, Costa Rica, France, Guatemala, Honduras, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Panama, Spain, United Kingdom
