Hey there! I'm a Canadian journalist, writer and editor, specializing in arts and travel writing. Along with my wife (who's somewhere on this site), I've lived on three continents and travelled across dozens of countries. We love walking through grungy city streets, snapping photos and popping into quiet bakeries.

We're going to be travelling across the northern Mediterranean, into Lisbon through to Israel, from November until the end of January. We'd love to meet locals, buy them a drink and learn more about their cities – and stay with whomever allows us.

I spent six weeks backpacking Europe alone in 2013 and largely relied on couchsurfers. Even the oddballs were friendly!

Once I ran like hell to catch a bus in Halifax, and after three minutes I caught up to it, so the bus driver smiled and opened the door, saying, "You woulda run 'til the very next stop, wouldn'tcha?" Everyone was applauding and nodding at me, and an elderly woman stood up to offer me her seat: "Here, son," she told me. "You've earned it."
