About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Host fellow travelers in one of the greatest cities in the world

ABOUT ME

I'm a science journalist in San Francisco and co-founder of the MajorPlanet Studios where I work on developing publishing tools for multimedia stories. I've always been interested in science, journalism and out there. So I spent my first few years after graduating as a reporter in Cambodia, and later managing editor of the Phnom Penh Post. Since then, it's been a circuitous route leading to San Francisco: stints in Atlanta at CNN; Nicaragua; Jakarta, Indonesia, New Haven; Washington, DC; and finally to the city on the Bay.

I always seem to find myself in the water: swimming, sailing, surfing or otherwise in the outdoors. My passion at the moment is the Pacific where I swim pretty regularly and try to raise a sail whenever possible. That's not as often as I might like as I'm a contributor to FastCompany, The Economist, Foreign Policy and other publications reporting on the intersection of science, economics, and the environment. I spend most of time working on MajorPlanet Studios, however, so keeping everything moving is quite an act.

You can also see more about me at my FastCompany profile -- http://www.fastcoexist.com/users/michael-j-coren -- or on Twitter @mj_coren.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I just joined, but I've been such a beneficiary of kindness of strangers on the road would love to offer a place to stay for those in similar situations. I have a sailboat where I sometimes stay, and always air mattress space in my studio apartment in SF, so let me know.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Just starting this now!

Interests

I love cooking, almost as much as eating, and do quite a bit of both when time allows. On my downtime it's a lot of reading, sailing, wooden boats, writing, learning about almost anything, blues dancing, and that's enough for one lifetime.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Watching the swell from three oceans roll across the Pacific from atop the mast of a tall ship as far from the nearest land as any point on Earth
