Taking a year off before grad school to unwind, earn just enough money to pay rent, eat well, and take little adventures.
I'm a 23-year old pizza waitress from Bloomington, Indiana. On the soft and quiet side at times, but assuredly always warm and eager. I survive on a cheap diet of strange omelets, good books, and Bell's beer when on weekly special. I recently graduated from Indiana University with a BA in English literature. I was a very serious student but now, having been cast out into open waters for a well-needed gap year, I'm figuring out what keeps me curious and adventuring without school. I'm waiting to hear back from MFA programs, but if all else fails, I will serve pizza all my days and consider myself happy.
My mom did me well teaching me how to live on a dime and be generous to others if for no other reason than for the personal consolation that everyone and everything is taken care of. I'm a worrier by nature, an heirloom habit from my mother, but I'm trying to learn how make good on it. I fell in love with Kenny Shopsin's advice from the documentary "I Like Killing Flies" about an eccentric restaurant owner in Greenwich Village. He said, "The first duty of everybody in life is to realize that they're a piece of shit. Selfish and self-centered and not very good. You're willing to sacrifice 20 thousand people in another country just so you can go to a Wings concert. You sacrifice the lives of a hundred thousand Chinese female babies just so you can rent this f'ing camera and do your stupid art project. No problem! You're a piece of shit. Once you realize you're a piece of shit it's not so hard to take. Because then you don't have this feeling that you're a good person all the time. And let me tell you something, feeling that you're a good person all the time is like having a brand new car with no scratches on it. It's a real responsibility which is almost impossible to live up to. Being a piece of shit and then occasionally doing something that's good and true is a much easier place to be. I think that's really important and I always try to raise my kids to understand that they're not that terrific. And that not being that terrific, that's okay 'cause most people who say that they're terrific, Bill Clinton, Cardinal Egan, anybody you want to talk about, they're not so terrific. Martha Stewart, they're not so beeping terrific either. And there's nothing wrong with being not-so-terrific. In fact, it's what the whole ballgame is about, being not-so-terrific... and accepting it."
Perché sono iscritto su Couchsurfing
I'm a brand new baby born to couchsurfing.
Four to five days a week I'm a server at a local pizzeria (very much a liberal college town/pizza version of Shopsins, a lá the film I Like Killing Flies). The other two-three days of the week you'll still find me at the pizzeria anyway, or glacially eating a maple donut with a half-priced book at my favorite bakery, or writing to my best friend in Thailand with a cup of soup at my favorite soup deli Darn Good Soup. My interests include writing, karaoke bars, Craigslist happenings, film & film studies, all-night diners, technical drawings, old houses, thrifting, salted chocolate, and ghost stories. I write poetry but not as often as I should. I love Fiona Apple and that song Pony by Ginuwine.
Musica, film e libri
I adore Stanley Kubrick and also love classic horror films, Rosemary's Baby in particular. I'm also a big fan of Sarah Polley's work.
Music is tricky to answer, but generally I find myself helplessly gravitating to female singer-songwriters like PJ Harvey, Fiona Apple, Tori Amos, St. Vincent, Feist, Aimee Mann, Hole, Mazzy Star, Bikini Kill, Cat Power, Speedy Ortiz, Hopalong...but I have also have a big soft spot for any band that sounds like a college punk show band, Joyce Manor in particular. All things First Wave and contemporary reimaginings of first wave synth pop like Solange, Blood Orange, Autre Ne Veut. Gritty Americana--The Growlers, Dirty Beaches, Johnny Cash. And I can get down, really down, to Drake and Kendrick Lamar.
I'm more of a poetry and short story gal, but I adore the novels of Zadie Smith. My top three favorite poets are Lynda Hull, Anne Sexton, and Ross Gay.
