About Me

paint a room in black and white stripes and hang black and white photos and live there quietly with a black and white cat and a red coffee mug

Post-hipster surrealist. Neo-hippy cabaret artist. Blah blah blah.

I have a day job and a cat too.

In a word: Entropy.

We can debate the relevance and meaning of anything from organic produce to Plato's Republic, and we are still no closer to harmony. There is a growing disconnect between emotion and intellect, individual and society, philosophy and reality.

To reach an understanding of the universe we need to first accept the impossibility of harmony. We need to accept subjectivity, obscurity, discord as an inherent component. So I can only offer you my biases, the world as viewed through the telescope of my life.

It's a frightening thought, that reality isn't an absolute. That the universe is malleable.

But rest assured I have some comfort:

Candide was Voltaire's fictional hero in a satire by the same name. After a long and arduous trot around the globe, Candide, failing in a quest to define the true nature of things, decides to settle down. He tells his friends, as they bicker amongst themselves, that "We must cultivate our garden."

Forget about the true nature of things: work with what you have, what you can prove, what you are able to experience directly.

So here I am - here we are - trying to cultivate a garden.

One Amazing Thing I've Done

Eight a.m. August 2005. Elevation: above 14,000 feet. Location: somewhere in the San Juan range of the Rockies.

We're the first ones up the mountain today and we can see for miles and miles and miles and the clouds gather in the tiny scalloped folds of the earth below us. It's windy and the air is thin and we have our backpacks with us, hiking ten or so miles later today - but right now, this moment - beautiful.
