Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Interests

Lately I've become more and more history/anthropology obsessive. Also, while I've greatly improved on my small talk, I derive true pleasure from thought provoking conversation. Emphasis on the conversation part. Forests.

Music, Movies, and Books

Too many. Tame Impala, Crystal Castles, Beck, Patrick Wolf, Florence + the Machine, Marlyn Manson, ABBA, Game of Thrones, Battlestar Galactica, Downton Abbey, Orange Is the New Black, House of Cards, 12 Years a Slave, Howl's Moving Castle, The Persian Boy, The Mists of Avalon, The Queen of the Damned, Giovanni's Room to name a few... I also love me a good documentary.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

In the school year of 2013 - 2014 I served as an AmeriCorps member for an education-based nonprofit named City Year. The heart of my work was in a West Philadelphia school providing academic, behavior, and attendance related intervention to seventh graders with huge personalities. The rest of my service consisted of various civic engagement related projects & events throughout The City of Brotherly Love. I met so many inspiring individuals, young and old, that year who vitalized in me a greater sense of community than I had ever had. I expect it doesn't come as a surprise that one of the most challenging experiences in my life thus far also ended up being my most rewarding. I can hardly think about concepts such as "leadership," "teamwork," or "humility" without being brought back to my "City Year," and everything I've learned. It's good to know that teachers come in all shapes and sizes.
