I'm on a year-long trip around the United States to work on farms. Right now I'm planning my road trip from Iowa to California and looking for couches to surf on the way!
I grew up on a conventional farm in Mitchellville, IA. I graduated from the University of Iowa in 2012 with a BA in English and went on to work for The Nature Conservancy for two years. I quit my job in July 2014 to build my freelance writing career and start learning how to farm. I'm finishing up a two-month internship on a farm in Atlantic, IA, in October and I'm moving to Chico, CA, to work on a farm from November-February. After that I plan to move out east.
I write a blog about my adventures called The Nomadic Farmer. In addition to traveling, farming, and writing, I love craft beer, cooking, running, and reading.
“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms.” -HDT
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
Currently looking for couches to surf. When I'm settled in a couple of years I hope to host surfers at my farm.
For the past two months I've been living with a couple in their sixties while I work on their farm. I've had my own bedroom but share all other parts of the house.
