One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Paksé, Laos. After an awesome moped tour through the Bolaven Plateau, including several breakdowns and hilarious hand eye conversations with local mechanics, around midnight 4 pretty tired travellers intended to walk back to the guesthouse.
"Sabai dee, Sabai dee, come here!" Chorused!
Sidewalk, about 15 Laotians, family and friends, young and old, sat together on a blanket, ate and called us over. The men sat outside, circular, enjoyed their meal and beer and kept their traps shut. The kids (from 3 to 7) scurried around, slept or built themselves insects out of styrofoam and wooden skewers to fly around with.
The women sat in the centre. The thin granny, the only one who spoke english and therefore was the voice, her permanently giggling sidekicks and the boss: The awesome bloody cool Mama! She managed everything, especially the continously filling of our glasses she handed us as soon as we arrived. Beer Lao, tasty but devilish....in a good way ;)
And grandpa watched the whole scene out of his cosy rocking chair remaining silent and smiling.
Flaming drunk and with broad grins - so that's how you combine celebrating and culture - we walked (once more) in the direction of our guesthouse. This time we made it :)
