关于我

CURRENT MISSION

Making the world a better place - withour beeing too corny or "holier than thou" about it :-)

ABOUT ME

Intro to Greenland:

I reccommend looking at www.greenland.com since this is
a great introduction to the country. I also think that
the old Lonely Planet guide "Greenland Iceland and the
Faeroe Islands" is pretty good for a brief
introduction (i havent read the new one). In general travelling in the country is very expensive. There is very little infrastructure - all internal travel is either by sea or air, there literally are NO roads connecting towns. I would reccommend deciding on one area, depending on what you like.

The south of Greenland is pretty accessible, and very
pretty - the towns are situated quite close together
so it is not too difficult to arrange private boat
transfers - there is some great hiking, and some
interesting norse/viking ruins - this is where Erik
the Red landed back in ... - and it is in comparison
to the rest of the country quite green - the weather
is a also somewhat warmer than in the north of the
country.

The north of Greenland - and here i am thinking of
Ilulissat icefjord - is probably the most famous, having recently been included on the UNESCO World Natural Heritage List. This is where you see the huge icebergs. This is also very pretty - and somewhat more touristic (not a bad thing - tourism anywhere in this country is still very new). Getting here is somewhat more expensive since it requires an internal flight or a 2 day ferry journey.

The middle of Greenland - ie. the capital of Nuuk - is
best visited if you know someone who lived here and
can show you around. This is not the most touristic
place in the country, and definitely not
representative - there are way too many people living
here, way too many danes and way way too many shops -
but it certainly has some attractions. The Nuuk fjord
is spectacular - and there is also some great hiking to
be done here - but I am biased since i live here :-)

As for meeting the locals - you do that anywhere and for anybody with an open mind it happens pretty automatically.

Other things to consider:
Volunteerism is not common here, so unless you speak fluent Danish og Greenlandic, I cant help you.
Up until this year the only way to get here was from Copenhagen, now there are some infrequent flights from Iceland and the US. Budget airlines dont come here so please dont ask. Check out www.airgreenland.com, www.icelandair.com, www.sas.com for schedules etc.

This is a very short introduction - I reccommend that
you do a little homework, and if you do decide to
visit, let me know and i will help you with an
itinerary.
