About Me

We are in BeWelcome @ http://www.bewelcome.org/members/paivisanteri.

Homo sapiens x 2, a male and a female, global nomads. Our trip started in 2004 and there is only one plan: no plans.

Every once in a while we write books or do research. Right now we are working on a research and a documentary project on long-term world travelers, global nomads.

The first book we wrote was about escaping the Rat Race in the beginning of our journey. It's called La Habanera and available freely in English, Finnish and Hebrew, and as a paperback. There are tips and tricks for travellers in our satirical tourism guide in English and Spanish. From our blog (http://www.2globalnomads.info/) you can read about travels and opinions. Our latest book, Free as a Global Nomad: An Old Tradition with a Modern Twist (Drifting Sands Press, 2012), is available in English: http://www.2globalnomads.info/2012/11/new-book-free-as-global-nomad.html

We carry in our backpacks sheets, sleeping bag, and camping mattresses, so don't worry if you don't have a couch for us. We are happy with a small piece of floor.

We have chosen not to carry a mobile phone. It was not worthwhile, especially getting new SIM cards in every country. Finding a public phone can be quite challenging, so we prefer contacting and keeping in touch by email. If that is an issue, it is better if you don't submit a Couch Request, offer to host us, propose to meet us, and send us your phone number for contacting you. Thank you for your understanding.

Because of humanitarian reasons we refrain from torturing our fellow travellers with thousands of photos. However, if you have masochistic tendencies, feel free to take a peek at them. They are all available here: http://www.2globalnomads.info/p/travel-photos-and-films.html . You can find there also our latest film about Crossing the Darien Gap.

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

We are hosting and being hosted. We are not travelling after sights and special places. Couch Surfing is for us a venue for meeting interesting people and sharing our lives with them. Many of the people we have met through CS have become good friends with whom we keep in contact regularly and meet again.

We proposed fixing the location selection so, that it would support better nomadic lifestyle. We visit Finland rarely, but keep it as our location because it is impossible to update it every time we move on. No matter what C$ claims, it is very likely that we are not coming from Finland or returning there. Sorry for the inconvenience.

So far we have hosted in Hong Kong, France, Italy, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. And couch surfed in those and other countries.

We are not really into seeing sights or visiting fancy places. Our journey started in 2004 and there has been far too many historical rock piles and fancy islands on our way to excite us any more. Instead, we like to meet people. So, please don't expect or organize anything special for us, or worry that we would get bored. And when you are busy, we are happy to do writing or go hiking. Our interests include jogging, hiking, animals, nature, reading, writing and making research on travellers. We love animals, but unfortunately we can't have our own dog as we are on the road permanently.

Other than hospitality exchange, we like to do house-sitting, or even better, pet-sitting so that we take care of the house and pets, and can stay there for free. We have naturally paid for our own food and sometimes also part of utilities costs. Other than that, we have done work exchange. We get food and lodging in exchange of our work. Here is for example a few websites we have done as work exchange:

Hospitality exchange has been particularly helpful in locating house-sitting, pet-sitting and work exchange opportunities. We are grateful for tips!

One Amazing Thing I've Done

Today, just now, this very moment.

Teach, Learn, Share

We are too stupid to teach and too lazy to learn, but we are happy to share. If you have a kitchen, we would love to cook for you and exchange recipes. But before you get too excited, we eat and cook strictly vegan food (no MSG, salt, or sugar) that does not require having anything killed or hurt (no flesh, fish, chicken, eggs, milk, yoghurt, butter, honey, snails, frogs, seafood, shrimps, oysters, elephants, dolphins, dogs, cats, horses, mussels, ...).

We are also happy to produce video films if you have an idea or occasion you would like to be recorded.

What I Can Share With Hosts

We prefer hosting and visiting members who are NOT verified:
- Buying yourself Verification won't help to "More easily find hosts to stay with". It might even make it harder
- Buying yourself Verification won't make CS safer
- If you need to buy yourself Verification to find/give a couch, something is wrong
- 94.3% of members are not buying Verification and most are 100% OK
- References and vouches say much more about a person than a Verification ever will.
- Verification only checks that the person can receive mail, not the actual location
- You have no way of knowing how long ago someone was Verified and if they have moved somewhere else since
- The Verification is there to make you feel bad for using CS the way it was intended: for free
- In 2008 CS had US$ 800.000 income from Verifications and real donations
- You can ask CS to have your Verification removed if you did not verify in order to gain "automatic benefits" or "better profile options"
- Many members, including verified members and ambassadors, are uneasy with Verification
- Certain hosts and surfers give preference to unverified surfers/hosts or don't host/surf at all Verified any more
- CS refuses to publish the data which allegedly backs up the claim that Verification makes finding/giving a couch easier
- Verification is promoted so aggressively because references don't sell for money

Hospitality exchange is all about trust, a network of trust. Don't support scams like verification eroding that trust. Instead of removing vouches to push the sales of verification, C$ needs to return vouches and remove verification. That can happen when people stop wasting money to verification.

Get rid of your verification and help to return the lost trust!
