About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Explore New Orleans dance, music, culture. Speak with folks. Revive my spirit.

ABOUT ME

I'm a dancer, hillbilly and former cowgirl from Walla Walla, WA; moved to Brooklyn four years ago to pursue Haitian and West African dance. I'm looking to explore parts of the U.S. unknown to me before I head West again for graduate school.

Interests

Dance and its many functions, especially social and spiritual.
I love people, love hearing stories. Learning how to shape the life that makes sense for me. Learning to play Haitian drum rhythms. Reconnecting to simplicity and slowness.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I spent a semester studying folkloric dance in Mali (West Africa), then went back twice after I graduated from school. The first trip strengthened and opened me up more than I ever would have imagined.

I'll never forget hiking and camping through Dogon country. The landscape was dry and somewhat bleak, marked by huge cliffs that serve as tombs for the Dogon to "bury" their dead. We crossed through fields of millet and I thought of my hometown with its dry summer wheatfields. It was the first time I felt the mysteriousness of life so intensely, and found myself opening up to more spiritual and mystical ways of thinking.
