Hi, I'm Pangea (formerly known as Rachel Anne Gottlieb), and my partner's name is Nico Hoof. Nico and I are starting our adventure around the globe. We started in Miami and have plans to go to New Orleans, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. After that we shall see where the wind blows us. We answered the prompts below as a couple and individuals so you can get a sense of who we are together and apart. You can find us both on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pleasecallmepangea and https://www.facebook.com/pleasecallmenico
Nico- I am a writer and an ESL teacher and I like to travel, usually with my guitar. I speak Spanish. I think people are good, or at least that good people outnumber bad ones. I'm still on the fence about whether or not I believe in coincidence. This year I turned twenty-nine and I left New York with my partner, who is so rad. The three coolest things I've ever ridden, in no particular order, are: camel, motorcycle, elephant. I almost never miss when I give a high-five.
Pangea- I am a lively, open-minded, positive woman. I enjoy smiling and being productive. I am maternal and warm. I really agree with the phrase "Home is where the heart is". I am a fashion designer and stylist and have a deep love for playing dress up. Dancing has served as one of the greatest modes of self expression for me.
Ideally I would love to learn every second of everyday. You can see my work, which I am so very passionate about on my site at www.pangeakalivirga.com
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
We have surfed our way around America and have both hosted in our respective homes in NYC and Morocco. We have had only positive and memorable couch surfing experiences that have led to a deeper understanding of the places we visited and our own home bases.
We are always interested in expanding our interests. Our favorite activities include long walks/hiking, going to art museums, making music, creating art, working on collaborative projects, cooking, going to shows, and any odd and exciting thing you can come up with.
Music, Movies, and Books
Nico- I really, really like music. Detroit soul and early rock and roll and sad cowboy jukebox songs especially, though I'm very amenable. I like dad rock and trap music, too. And punk music. And jazz. I really, really like music.
My favorite movies are slow burning indie films or truly ridiculous,high-budget, American action movies. My favorite television show is Planet Earth.
In the way of literature, Ken Kesey, Joan Didion, Eduardo Galeano, and Junot Diaz are some of my favorite writers. My favorite poets are Amiri Baraka, Pablo Neruda, and Patricia Lockwood. My favorite comic books are Animal Man and Swamp Thing. It's all important.
BOOKS- I am an avid reader and especially love everything and anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, William Faulkner, and ee cummings.
MUSIC- I am a huge fan of old school rap and anything and everything I can dance to.
MOVIES- I prefer movies that are dialogue driven. Some of my favorite films are by Ingmar Bergman. I'm also a huge fan of documentaries and avant garde art films.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Pangea- I am really proud of my ability to bring people together on collaborative projects where they are able to express themselves while also contributing to a larger goal. Probably the best example of this was the time I managed over a 100 people for a runway as a producer and mentored 23 designers as curator/art director, helping and supporting them while they achieved their visions. Nothing seems more important to me then creating spaces for people to do the things they are passionate about and it continues to be an honor to do this all the time as a designer and stylist.
Nico- A few years ago, I sold a painting of a pterodactyl with Abraham Lincoln's skull on it to Theresa Heinz, heiress of the ketchup billions and wife of former secretary of state John Kerry. Every day, I wonder if its above their marital bed or in one of their dog houses or in the trash. The painting wasn't very good. Art is magic. In a close second, I started the first English language book club in Rabat, Morocco, and we read Hemingway.
Teach, Learn, Share
Pangea- I am very knowledgeable in garment construction and alterations, sketching with many different mediums, styling, and curation. I can easily teach someone how to sew on a button or how to spruce up some of your old things or come up with new ways to wear your clothes you would have never considered.
Always interested in sharing or learning a vegan recipe.
Nico- There is no real set limit to what I want to learn; I'd like to learn as much as possible, which is one reason why experiences like couch surfing are so valuable. I can teach you how to dougie.
