What a nice guy! So kind, earnest, compassionate. Open, generous, thoughtful. Constructive! Dashing! Delightful. A good egg.

I am indeed many of the things my friends would say about me, but, as is true of most human beings, we are so much more than the stories we tell about ourselves. I've been reeling in my niceness, lately, and watching where and when I spend my energy in service of others. I find that the more mindful I am of my own needs, and the less I take urgent responsibility for others' needs, the happier everybody is in the end.

Loved hosting the two German teenagers Nikolaus and Federico for their disarming and easy-going charm, delighted by the Korean couple and their socially responsible entrepreneurial aims. Always come away from these experiences feeling more awake.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Alone under a full moon, a mile beyond the trash fence at Black Rock City, sitting on the parched desert floor, the valley walls and thunderheads illuminated by a lighting storm.

Processing 8 terabytes in fifteen minutes on a few hundred machines in a Google datacenter using distributed processing algorithms.

A throbbing glob of pain on my right buttock dissolving into ten thousand pulsating pixels of tolerable discomfort during a silent meditation retreat. Realizing that my conscious mind had just peeled back a layer of abstraction on my body's senses.
