One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
When I was a graduate student I got to visit the Magellan telescopes in Chile, which are high up in the Atacama desert (which looks like the moon with a few extra bushes). The reason they are built there was clear on the first night of our trip - the stars were twinkling not in brightness, but in color, flashing red and green before my eyes so that at first (being a city girl) I thought I was looking at the signal lights of high-flying jets. This phenomenon, known as chromatic scintillation, only occurs when the atmosphere is so still and clear that you can see variations in the index of refraction for different wavelengths of light. There are only a few places in the world from which this effect can ever be seen, and then only part of the time. To me, these subtle fireworks were a beautiful and elegant symbol of our attempts to understand the world around us.
