to randomly disappear on annual odysseys, and keep the ambitions high, and the costs low....
I am a laissez-faire, cultured, free-thinking former travel agent, obsessed by music and the arts in general.
I love how big the world is, and want to see it AALLL!
Recently, I became a primary teacher of little kids, and a registered marriage celebrant, so if you feel like marrying someone while I am around, I can help! In fact, I'll swap the ceremony for a tall glass of beer. Cheap rates! Uh-oh, I can smell a visa wedding.....
I am big into getting some diverse photos of me in the wide, wide world, so I can inspire my students to lap up travel as much as they can......
I'd love to be a little responsible for their future adventures.
In the old days, people had pen friends, and maybe saw the other side of the world once or twice, then settled down a bit.
I am more dependent on adventure, and love the company of like-minded folk around the globe, who are probably remarkably similar, only who would know, eh, unless you meet, yes? There is an opportunity-cost to living in your home town: you are not in 3 other places simultaneously!
(Surely, some part of me resides still in Barcelona? I must return to find myself...)
I hope to couch surf for maybe 2-3 months of every year, and then enjoy repeat surfs, or new people the rest of the time, to run up some credit! Thats sounds like a cushy and productive use of a lifetime. Then, when not teaching, off I go! To learn more, I expect...
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I currently share in a beautiful home in inner Melbourne, and don't know if the housemates would welcome surfers at the moment.
BUT, I have my own apartment in inner Melbourne, which will be perfect for a wave of Couch Surfers when I move back into it soon (maybe in 1 or 2 years).
Then, I'd like people to Room Surf, with their own double bed, and I'd love to show them the area of North Melbourne - a brilliant suburb within walking distance to downtown Melbourne!
I look forward to blowing the trumpet of couch surfing, and breaking down barriers between strangers, living beautifully, globally.
Found some wonderful people in Sweden who opened their spare room to a friend and I.
Enjoyed a lounge room in Boston for a week. The fact that the house got flooded, and the housemates were evicted in that week is an amusing aside. It had nothing to do with me. Honestly. That should have cooled my heels a bit, but I still prefer real life to hotels and hostels...
Seeing awesome local bands,
Shipping container architecture,
Great Bars of the World, featuring me,
Music, Movies, and Books
New Pornographers, Guided by Voices, Rolling Stones, The Necks, Magnetic Fields, Arthur Lee and LOVE, Scott Walker, 60s pop, Turbonegro, hundreds of bands, really, including New Zealand avante-garde pop, also metal, garage. I used to work in a record shop in London, so it is a passion.
I am starting to like contemporary local playwrights, like Joanna Murray Smuth, etc.
I enjoy art-house, gonzo, and cult cinema, but still go for the odd silly spectacle now and then. Early Jack Nicholson, Kubrick, Coen Bros, Charlie Kauffman....
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Bought breakfast instead of hitting the observation deck at WTC, 9/11, 8.40 am.
Teach, Learn, Share
I play guitar, can entertain a room full of children, using only my mind and voice (for a really short time), know a bit of yoga, can recommend Australian wines and beers, can share my music knowledge and make great mix tapes, and would like to cook in another land, with some wonderful wine, some happy smiling people, and some kooky ingredients....
I can philosophise adequately, and am fully emotionally road-tested.
