One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Documentary Film -- Soldier to Civilian: The Experiences and Transitions of American and German veterans of the Afghanistan War.

I worked from Oct 2008 - July 2009 making this film, traveling and filming around Germany for one month, then filmed in the United States. My focus was not only the experience of individual soldiers in Afghanistan, but also the modern approach toward Western national militaries, as told through the common soldier's perspective. Additionally, my doc covers their homecoming, their initial feelings of home and safety, and society's reactions to these returning soldiers.

Germany and the United States are technically on the same 'side' in the Afghanistan War. However, are they all fighting the same cause? What do individual soldiers believe the cause is? All German troops, approximately 3,750 soldiers (as of June 2009), are serving in cooperation with the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Americans also have troops serving under the ISAF flag, numbering approximately 26,200 troops (as of June 2009). Additionally, however, there are also around 28,300 American troops serving in Afghanistan under Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). This film touches on the relationship between international forces and the United States, answering some and inspiring more questions concerning how an allied force made up of many diverse nations can effectively counter an enemy, all while respecting local tradition and protecting the community in which they serve.
