About Me

ABOUT ME

Oh goodness, describing myself! I'm a nerd, but not a typical nerd. The internet still tends to be a mysterious entity to me. I end up on sites like this and tumblr because of friends kinda pushing me onto them. But I'm a huge reader and writer. Science fiction and fantasy are my genres of choice. If you like Brandon Sanderson (and not for finishing the Wheel of Time series), you and I will most likely be friends. And if you're willing to nerd out about Harry Potter, I'm also your girl. Despite the fact that I'm a bookworm, I love to go out, meet new people, and experience new things. That's why I'm in Sydney for the next 5 months. So, any Sydney people, say hi! I'm really wanting to make new friends.

Interests

How do I spend my time? Well, past reading and writing, my main hobbies are skydiving and the SCA.

So, I jump out of airplanes. I'm actually a coach-rated, gold medalist. Which sounds super cool unless you realize that my gold medal is in the super novice section of collegiate skydiving (but I'll still brag). It's not a hobby that I'll probably be big in while in Sydney (it's very expensive here), but it's still a big part of my life.

The SCA is the Society for Creative Anachronism. We learn about history through living it. We get together, teach each other how to do different things. I can make my own clothing (yes, I use a sewing machine, but I could do it by hand, it would just take forever). I can cook over a fire. But, most importantly, I can fight. I have a full suit of lamellar armor that I don, grab a shield, and a solid bamboo sword, and then get together with my friends and we beat each other up.

Oh, and you're in a kingdom in the SCA. Doesn't really matter where you are... you're in a kingdom with a king and a queen, a prince and a princess. Look us up... you learn a ton and you have a blast while doing it.

Other than that, I'll probably just be a beach bum while I'm in Sydney.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

First moment is obvious: When I first stepped out of an airplane with no one holding onto me. This was jump 8 or 9 and it was my first solo dive. That realization that yes, I'm getting ready to hurl myself towards the ground and I'm so okay with this... That was heavy. The adrenaline rush was powerful. I was already hooked on skydiving, but that was the confirming moment of my lifelong new hobby.

This one is rather hard to explain, but also related to one of my hobbies. Making something for the first time and feeling crafty was an amazing feeling for me. When you realize that you have a chance to actually be self reliant; making your own clothes, cooking your own food without any modern appliances, defending yourself using only a stick... It's a freeing feeling. It made me want to go explore the world with nothing but the necessities and, through the education the SCA has given me, the list of necessities shrinks by the day.
