About Me

I'm in my final year of a 4 year PhD studying Immunology, which is a branch of biology dealing with understanding how your body can react to infection.

I hate writing about myself! I guess I'm easy going and friendly? If I ever write an autobiography I'm going to get a ghost writer to do it because when it comes to myself, I have very little to say. I have a lot to say about everything else though!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

A friend travelled across much of Asia and Africa couch surfing all the way. His stories made me want to try it out! Learning new things, meeting new people and having lots of fun experiences sounds like a sweet deal!

Interests

Everyone is into listening to music, watching movies and spending time with friends, but I'll write it anyway. Stating the obvious. Travelling and experiencing new cultures, sites and food. Cooking and baking. Fishing (which I don't do enough of). Going to football (aka Soccer) and rugby games. Hill walking. Going to comedy and music gigs. Currently renewing an old interest in drawing. Everything related to science, particularly biology as it's my field.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: So I've been called a music snob more times than I care to remember. I don't think that's necessarily the case, but I suppose I can be quite passionate about what I like and dislike! You can find my last.fm page here: http://www.last.fm/user/BoyG

Movies: Where to begin? I have also been called a movie snob on a eh... number of occasions (noticing a trend yet?). I can't really say I have a least favourite genre, because there are always good examples of any kind of film! Well actually, I could say 'I don't enjoy the typical modern horror movies that rely on cheap tricks to try to scare the audience', I think that's fair.

Talking about favourites is always a struggle for me, it's too decisive! Depending on mood, peoples preferences can change. I suppose for now I'll write a list of generic genres below and put the first movie I can think of beside it.

Action: Indiana Jones Trilogy (I wish I could underline trilogy here)
Comedy: Groundhog Day
Foreign Language (I realise it's not fair to call this a genre): Rashōmon
Drama: American History X
Documentary: Touching the Void
Fantasy: Princess Bride
Crime: Se7en
Horror: Alien
Science Fiction: Primer
Western: Unforgiven
War: Apocalypse Now (Internal war blah blah and it's set against the backdrop of Vietnam so it counts dammit!)
Musical: Oliver (I think this is my only definite favourite from all the above)

Books: I enjoy science fiction and fantasy mostly, however I have been known to read the odd historical non-fiction. I'm always open to a recommendation of a good book. I'm probably a snob about books too, but no one has called me out on that just yet.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Drank a beer on the Great Wall of China

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach you about biology, but no one in their right mind would be interested in hearing about that!

What I Can Share with Hosts

A bed in Maynooth, a university town with little appeal. I mean it has some nice restaurants and bars but the main upside is it has train and bus connections to Dublin (About a 40 minute journey).

Countries I’ve Visited

Austria, Belgium, China, Czech Republic, England, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States

Countries I’ve Lived In

Ireland
