About Me

WhatsApp: +32 472 65 18 87
Instagram: rubenvanhees86 or ICEWIM

My name is Ruben, I am 35 years old, born in the Netherlands (Weert) and raised in Belgium (Maaseik).

I consider myself as a rather modest person (In Swedish they use the word Lagom, which basically means "Not too much, not too little"). I can enjoy many different experiences, but not to an extreme. I like movies very much, but this doesn't mean that I enjoy watching one movie after the other. I enjoy live music, but I wouldn't chase one specific musician on his tour around the world. When I go out I can just have a drink and talk, but also dance till the morning.
Please let me know how you like to spend your time with me before I sending me a request. I know that some hosts just give their guests a key and hardly talk to them during their stay. For me it's important to get to know my guest(s), otherwise I prefer not to host.

I'm also a startup entrepreneur who's currently working on physical product design in the field of swimwear and ergonomics-design furniture. My next Kickstarter: www.icewim.co.

Since I'm interested in different languages and cultures, I created a platform for language learning (www.bey.academy).

I like to play rhythm with my hands, walk in nature (barefeet and especially with a dog), laying on the beach, making a campfire, aquariums, dancing bachata or champeta, exotic fruits (always taste better far away), a game of chess or texas hold'm poker, paragliding, kayaking, watching people live their lives, late coffees and early wines, no plans many surprises, sauna & spa, walking on the wild side of life!
If you like any of these as well, we could maybe do that together?

But whatever we do, let's take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, own nothing but memories and most important kill nothing but time.

Whether you need a place to sleep or you just want to spend some time with me, feel free to get in touch.

'The most dangerous worldview is the worldview of those who have not viewed the world.' (Alexander von Humboldt, most likely)

'There's always something happening, but nothing going on.' (Lennon)

Please read before you write!

First of all, don't bother writing me a request if:
- You just got married and would like to use couchsurfing for your honeymoon (yes I did get requests like that!).
- You will arrive late at night and will leave again early morning.
- You will arrive in more than a month from now. I have absolutely no idea what I'll be doing exactly, so I won't be able to confirm.
- You are a group of 3 or more people and you know it's too many but you want to be flexible by offering to sleep basically just anywhere on the floor or in my bathtub :)
- You have an empty profile, but you justify this by saying you're "new to couchsurfing", and you are so considerate to provide me with a link to your facebook profile. If you want people to offer their home to you, the least you can do is describe who you are.
- You are using CS as a financial means to safe some money on your journey. I do like to go and do something with my guest and this of course wouldn't be on my expense.

Since I prefer to go through life as a realist, let me start with the following:
I know it's rather unlikely that someone would read my entire profile before sending me a couch request and I also don't expect that.
During my travels I've also been guilty of sending out some last minute requests without doing much effort to personalize them. Nevertheless, if you have the time, I would honestly appreciate it if you would try to do that to a certain extent.

One thing I want my future guests to know is my honest opinion on CouchSurfing.
When I joined the community back in 2007, it really was somewhat an alternative layer of society with like-minded people. Unfortunately, nowadays it has lost a lot of its charm. As with many shared community platforms, at some point it will show the best and the worst of people. What I mean by this is that, you will find, let's be diplomatic, "eccentric" people in this community, which can range from sexual (Nudism, BDSM, Swinging) to dietary lifestyles (Freeganism), alternative spiritual practices (Voodooism), etc.
Whether or not CS is the right place for all these subcultures, I'm not going to discuss now.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Since I have been couchsurfing for many times now, I decided it's time for me to give something back to the community by starting to host myself.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've been couchsurfing in the United Arab Emirates, California, the Balcans, the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Northern Africa and South America.

My experiences with CouchSurfing were really good, always had a great time getting to know the people who hosted me or stayed at my place. Never change a winning team!!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Overnight stay in the desert, living with the local bedouins.. Unbelievable how many stars you can see at night!!

During 6 weeks, I was a volunteer (English Teacher) in an agricultural area of Thailand (Surin). I had the opportunity to homestay with a very nice family, from whom I learned about the Thai culture.

PHILOSOPHY

When I'm good, I'm good, but when I'm bad, I'm better! ;)

The one who follow the crowd will usually get no further than the crowd. The one who walks alone, is likely to find himself in places no one has ever been.

Live a life you don't need a vacation from!

Anybody can get a job.., it takes a man to make it without working.

The universe has no center and it has no edges.

There is surely nothing other than the single purpose of the present moment. A man's whole life is a succession of moment after moment. If one fully understands the present moment, there will be nothing else to do, and nothing else to pursue.

Age is of no importance unless you are a cheese.

Those who do not move, do not notice their chains.

Not all those who wander are lost.

Money can't buy happiness. But it can buy marshmallows, which are kinda the same thing.

Judging a person does not define who they are. It defines who you are.
