About Me

Ryan Severn & Natalie Fullard.
We met whilst working in the hospitality trade in Cornwall, UK about 2 years ago. I am a cook and Natalie has vast experience across the board in hospitality.

We hatched a plan to work and save enough money to Backpack around Southeast Asia, by December 2016 we were ready. With a one-way ticket, backpack and sense of adventure, our new life was about to start!

Since then we have seen so many beautiful places, ate delicious cuisines, mingled with locals, made new friends, flown, sailed, railed, rode, drove, hiked and swam across a myriad of terrains, climates and countries.

Up to now we have spent; 30 days - Thailand, 60 days - Vietnam, 30 days - Malaysia, and are halfway through our 60 day - Indonesia visa. We fly to Melbourne, Australia on July/21st to find work and continue the journey!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

From our time traveling, it has become clear to us that the best way to get to know a town, city or country is by immersing yourself completely in its culture. Some of our most memorable experiences have been homestay's, where we spent time living in the homes of locals, giving us a front row view of their day to day life.

CouchSurfing to us seems like the best possible way of meeting new people, living a few days in their shoes, and experiencing a place in all its glory. Mainly it serves as a culture exchange, a way to share stories, ideas, knowledge and laughter with likeminded people from all over the globe. Hopefully we can learn new things and leave a pleasant memory in the minds of the people we meet.

Once we finish traveling and settle down, we look forward to being able to open our home up to other surfers and become a host in our own country.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One of the best experiences to date for the both of us has to be when we bought motorcycles in Hanoi, Vietnam and rode them all the way down through the country ending in Ho Chi Minh City.

Neither of us had driven motorcycles before this journey, and we didn't really know what to expect. Armed with a road map, waterproofs and supplies we hit the road. Not fully aware of the huge learning curve ahead.

Hanoi traffic is absolutely bonkers! Thousands of bikes zooming in and out of every space imaginable at great speed, we barely made it out of the city alive! All cities we visited were the same.

Fortunately the country roads were a different story completely! Towering limestone cliffs, green expanses of rice paddies, Buffaloes, bamboo forests, Pho cafe's and traditional villages.

English is seldom spoken in rural Vietnam so we had to learn the basics very quickly! This enabled us to interact with the locals much more effectively. We try to continue this practice in each country we visit, it has really helped enrich our traveling experience.

Our leisurely trip took just over 4 weeks and we covered a distance of 3,000km or so. The sights, smells and experiences will never be forgotten and we have many stories of success, failure, highs, lows, breakdowns, and flat tyres.
We are both a little wiser and street smart, from our Amazing time in Vietnam!

We urge everyone to take up the challenge, and experience it for yourself! Just stay off the 1A and stick to the scenic back roads and you will have the trip of a lifetime.
