Sobre mí

Hey there! My name's Sam and I'm a 26 year old Australian fellow currently travelling throughout the Northern Hemisphere, checking out some of the sights and sounds. I've been spending the last 6 months mainly doing these 'Workaway' volunteer experiences which have been a great way to get a sense of the local culture, people and community.

In-between these workaway stints, I find myself doing the usual flitting between youth hostels when checking out the major points of interest and this is something I'd rather avoid at this stage of my life. So this leads me to joining Couchsurfing, where I hope to offer a home cooked meal/stimulating discussion/musical jam/whatever I can offer in exchange for a semi-comfortable place to sleep/some local knowledge & tips/the sweet escape from 14 bedroom dormitory hell!

So a bit more about me before you potentially let me loose in your home; I come from Naarm (the Melbourne area) in Australia where I was working with young Aboriginal students as a youth worker. This was a pretty incredible experience in which I was able to get a glimpse into the oldest living culture in the world and the amazing strength and resilience it has shown in the face of 200 years of colonisation and oppression. I was also pretty active as a volunteer in the environmental movement in Australia and got involved in various groups practicing non-violent direct action against the powers that be.

So based on the above information you've probably deduced that my politics are about as left as they come, pretty anarcho leaning and always up for discussion. I also like to not take things to seriously and love to have a beer and laugh about how screwed up the world is. I'm also a big board-game enthusiast, enjoy going for a run or a hike exploring new places, play a bit of guitar/ukulele/stringed things and love going out for a good boogie. As for my Myer-Briggs personality type I'm an ENFP so make of that what you will but am generally a very laid-back, sociable and humorous kind of fellow.

So yeah, if you'd be happy to save this way too cynical for his age Aussie from the Contiki circuits, I really would love to cook you up a delicious feed, have a chat and get to know what you're all about.

Música, películas y libros

Music: I really can enjoy listening to anything from classical to hip-hop but I gotta say I'm a big rap fan. Some of my favourites include Slick Rick, Killer Mike, Masta Ace, UGK, Outkast, Little Brother, Mos Def etc. I've also been jamming a lot of the Cocteau Twins, William Onyeabor, Fela Kuti, Talking Heads, Chance the Rapper and Anderson Paak recently, and of course Paul Simon is my all time favourite. I always like to hear tunes from other countries that I may not have heard yet, and I can always show you some Australian artists (other than ACDC).

Movies: I've always been a big fan of world cinema ever since I was little so I enjoy anything with subtitles or the occasional dub like in the Ghibli films. It's always hard to decide/remember but some of my all-time favourites are The Big Lebowski, The Darjeeling Limited, This is England, Run Lola Run, Tell No One, Pan's Labyrinth, Call me by your name... the list goes on. Series wise, I love the HBO classics The Wire, Sopranos, Oz etc., I find it hard to stay up to date with new stuff but have recently enjoyed Black Mirror.

Books: I'm a big fantasy/sci-fi nerd. My favourites include Steven Erikson, Ursula K Leguin, Frank Herbert, Isobelle Carmody, Diana Wynne Jones. I'm also enjoy magical realism so a lot of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Bohumir Hrabal, Tim Winton and Margaret Atwood goes down well. I'm always looking for recommendations so let me know what you enjoy!
