Trying to figure out how to live when we are governed by a system whose only 'ethic' is greed
I live in San Francisco, and I have traveled to Europe, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Central (and now) South America. I have lived in Japan, written travel guides to seven destinations (and apps to three) and have explored remote areas of Asia. I can speak English (obviously!), Spanish, Indonesian, and Japanese.
Enlightened self interest, e.g. the common good is in my benefit. Try to control what I can influence by contacting my political "leaders" etc.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I have hosted couchsurfers and met with several abroad. I have participated in events here in SF.
I have not yet stayed with anyone, but I have many experiences being invited into peoples' homes, especially in Southeast Asia.

Music, Movies, and Books
I like independent films and documentaries, including ones from Japan, Korea, China, Iran, India, the US and Canada. Samples: Darwin's Nightmares, all Adam Curtis documentaries, Fish Tank, Phyllis and Harold, Ozu, Bergman, Kore Eda, Wiseman, Miike, etc.
I read both fiction and nonfiction, esp. Indian authors (largely Parsees), Anne Tyler, John Updike, V.S. Naipaul, Arundhati Roy, Okky Madasari, etc.... Too many to name!
I like jazz (Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Matthew Shipp, Charles Mingus, Chris Potter, Eric Dolphy and innumerable others), salsa, African music (Mali, Zimbabwe in particular), folk music and some blues, rock and R&B. I don't like heavy metal or hiphop....
