About Me
My name is Sarah Hasz and my life has been ... interesting, to say the least.
The short explanation is that I'm VERY recently out of an extremely toxic and psychologically abusive relationship—one that lasted twelve years, and that I'm still trying to work past.
In July of 2016, my whole life was destroyed. I was in what should have been a fatal car accident—I swerved to avoid something in the road (I'm not sure what, and now due to post-traumatic amnesia I lost my recollection of what few memories I DID have.
In swerving, I first collided with the median, and then somehow wound up on the other side of the freeway, up on the embankment. My truck rolled three complete times and when it finally settled, right-side up, it was facing the opposite direction, meaning that it had spun on the roof at some point.
The first responding officer said that he firmly believed, from the damage, that he was going to be retrieving a body.
And he was, in a sense: I was driving up to Fry's Electronics to pick up some stupid adapter, and I took my best friend and German shepherd, Jade, with me. When the crash happened, I had a split second to decide what to do—and so I flung myself sideways and tried to brace Jade.
That officer said later that he thought that was the only way I hadn't been more seriously injured. If I hadn't leaned sideways like that, the way the windshield buckled when the truck rolled would have fully decapitated me.
I came away from that accident with the tip of my left ring finger broken, my left middle finger also broken but left to heal on its own (because the hospital I was taken to even missed the FIRST break until my hand started swelling up like a balloon). I have a line of stitches above my left eye. And I have PTSD.
Jade died saving me; this I firmly believe. When my mom dragged me to look at other German shepherds, "or maybe even a puppy!" ... I met a Native American who worked evening security, and he told me (after apologizing preemptively, because some people apparently get offended when he shares his tribal beliefs, which I think is RIDICULOUS) that his tribe believes that, in some cases, the animal can choose to save its human companion, dying in their stead.
And it just felt ... so -right-.
My -other- best friend, the human one, whom I fully believed was my soulmate ... stopped returning my calls. She'd threatened to self-harm before, so I called the police to do a welfare check, and ... well, she told the officer to tell me that if I tried to contact her again, she -would- press charges.
I've since found a wonderful group of friends online, who love and support and care about me, and between their support and Malachite (yes, I did get another German shepherd after all)'s unfaltering love, I'm starting to heal.
To be honest, I feel more than a bit like ... like a phoenix.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
After the crash, I moved back in with my parents, and ... well ... as much as I love and adore them, my mom has back problems and my stepdad works constantly, so the house has fallen into disrepair.
Specifically, the only bathroom with shower capabilities is overrun with roaches.
I'd also like to travel up to Flagstaff, or even to Texas, and I thought this site sounded fantastic for those purposes!

Music, Movies, and Books
My musical tastes are all over the map, but off the top of my head ... Vienna Teng (I saw her in concert once, and she was AMAZING!!), The Piano Guys, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Halsey, The Hush Sound, Set It Off, First Aid Kit, Fleet Foxes, Imagine Dragons, Blue Oyster Cult, Regina Spektor, Celtic Woman, He is We, and Steam-Powered Giraffe.
I also LOVE musicals, such as Be More Chill, Sweeney Todd, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Heathers, Dear Evan Hansen, and a couple others I'm sure I've missed.
My favorite movie, hands down, is Gattaca. The soundtrack is gorgeous and you should go buy it RIGHT NOW. But I also adore, for example, the Firefly series (although the movie Serenity is DEAD TO ME), American Horror Story, The X-Files, and so on.
And I ADORE books. Some of my favorite authors include Peter S. Beagle (I met him in person, and he's my idol! My own writing voice has developed more completely because of his writing, and for that I will be forever grateful), Diana Wynne Jones (I cried for hours after I found out that she had passed away), Lois McMaster Bujold, Neil Gaiman, and Connie Willis (-especially- Passage!)
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I did not commit suicide after losing everything that meant anything to me, by my own hand.
That's pretty incredible, don't you think?
Teach, Learn, Share
I can critique a manuscript and talk your ears right off your head about characterization, symbolism, themes ...
I'd love to learn a musical instrument, of any kind! I can plink a bit on the piano but that's pretty much the limit of my prowess.
What I Can Share with Hosts
Babbling about things I'm interested in, mainly!
I can also bring over a PS3 -or- an xbox 360 -or- a PS4. I'd be delighted with the latter, actually; my parents' TV died recently and it was the only one in the house capable of HD and therefore HDMI cables.
And I have a decent collection of cool board games, such as Kill Dr. Lucky and Torchwood!
