the word apathy is my new favorite. here's why:
apatheia, as used by the Greek Stoics, originally embodied a sense of freedom from the passions (patheia), which were seen as the root of suffering.
there was a distinction between patheia (passion or feelings resulting from incorrect judgment), propatheia (instinctive feelings, i.e., trembling from fear), and eupatheia (feelings resulting from clear, objective judgment; equanimity).
the resultant state of mind, freed from the afflictive emotions, was termed ataraxia (not disturbed). that is, irregardless of external conditions, the mind remained clear and balanced...
