About Me

Back from Europe, for now...

I was surprised recently when a friend complimented me on my work ethic - I've been too busy to notice that I have one! I have a lot of enthusiasm for great projects and/or brilliant ideas, which makes me an occasional whirlwind of activity that is apparently dizzying to watch. The word "integrity" comes up a lot - I do my best to keep my word, honour my debts, speak the truth (tactfully), and get the job done. I'm too hard on myself sometimes, and a significant setback or unfortunate outcome can hit me pretty hard, but I tend to bounce back within a day or two. I'm curious about new people, places, and things - although not always in that order – and I make intuitive mental leaps that I am told are really interesting. And I care. A lot. Not the big, change-the-world sort of caring; I'm more interested in small, individual struggles - every one of our "lives of quiet desperation" is important, inspiring, and worthy of recognition. Often amusing, occasionally funny, but I’m mostly quiet and usually occupied with some project or other. Doing good work is generally what I’m all about, not philanthropically speaking or in a spiritual sense, but I do like to think that doing your best will naturally help other people and make you a better person in the process.

I haven’t travelled extensively but I have moved around a lot, which I think amounts to much the same thing. We carry our lives with us wherever we go but what surrounds us has as much influence on us as we each have on our surroundings – just being alive is a participatory act. Life requires us to find a balance between autonomy and deference, and to act with both self-confidence and humility in the name of compassion and community. The older I get, the better I understand that and the more I appreciate it.

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

I’m still fairly new at this, but in terms of how I generally like to participate in things, I always like to pull my weight and to contribute something useful and meaningful. As a guest I help out with tasks and chores, respect the rules, and try to maintain that balance between active social interaction and unobtrusiveness.

As noted above I’m new to this site but, like most people, I have occasionally been either a guest or a host in the company of friends and/or family. In passing I’ve sometimes met travelers who were en route to their next couchsurfing destination, and my impression is that it’s a similar experience to hostelling. I recently relocated to Europe from North America so I’ve been doing a lot more guesting lately.

Music! I worked in a record store for five years, and now I do PR and management for musicians. So, I also like writing/communicating, sharing the things that excite me, and planning/organizing/implementing plans and projects. I like to make things happen - but they have to have some sort of purpose - anyone can dig a hole, but not everyone can make it the foundation for something more. When I'm not doing that sort of stuff, I like to ride my bike, take pictures of things I find interesting, discover new stuff - in other words feed my head, and keep moving, whether physically or mentally, just always keep moving.

Music, Movies & Books

Recently: Film: The Ruling Class; Music: Ides of Gemini; Books: “The Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath”, by H.P. Lovecraft. (Moby Dick remains one of my favourite books for its contrasts of meticulous descriptive prose with high drama and of methodical observation with self-destructive obsession.)

One Amazing Thing I've Done

Neurosis concert in 1994 - no concert before or since has ever come close to that experience for me, it was like watching a galaxy being born.

Riding my bike. Sometimes - not always, but sometimes - you have that moment where everything is happening at just the right pace, and you *flow*. I love that feeling.

Making things happen for artists - watching them play an important show, helping them to realize some goal or project, knowing they're getting the recognition they deserve - to me, there's nothing more rewarding than that.

Teach, Learn, Share

Ooh, don’t ask me that. I think I teach people to ask their own questions so that they can really own their answers. Practically speaking, I’m a creative so most of my skills are in those areas. I like learning from people who like to share.

Countries I've Visited

Belgium, France, United Kingdom, United States
