About Me

I like to simply put that I'm a dirt worshiping tree hugger. To elaborate, I love the natural world and studying it, I went to school for Forest and Rangeland Management with an emphasis on soil science, but I found that I really love learning about plants. Thanks to school I also found my partner during those years. I love to explore and go backpacking/hiking whether its in the desert or the mountains. While I'm up in those mountains I really love to go rock climbing as well, I enjoy mentally pushing myself to grow into a stronger and wiser person. I enjoy trying to be active throughout the week, whether it's with jogging or yoga, and hope to one day go through the yoga teacher certification course. I don't necessarily want to be a teacher but I want to expand my knowledge on the practice and share what I learn with others.

I do not enjoy Facebook and refuse to have one ever again, but I'm a sucker, and enjoy the creative outlet of Instagram and use that: @desertbean13

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Even though I enjoy the solitude that you find in the back country, I often yearn to want to share those experience with others that I know and love or that may be new to me. I'm drawn to couch surfing because even though I'm more of an introverted person in some respects, I enjoy making connections with people and building community

Interests

Besides my interests of the natural world and the hobbies listed about, I'm also interested in creating things and learning primitive skills. I've been knitting for years, but more recent things I've learned are sandal making, primitive pottery, soft fiber weaving, and stacked handle making for knifes.
Along with creative interests I'm also interested in agriculture and alternative lifestyles.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music that I'm drawn to is typically alternative indie, Modest Mouse, Arcade Fire, Mountain Man, as well as bluegrass and old country music, though sometimes the little high schooler in me still enjoys that heavy metal phase.

As for movies, Into the Wild, Amelie and more recently Moonrise Kingdom are a few off the top of my head that I can always enjoy. As I'm getting older I've noticed that I've become less interested in zombie and horror films.

Books that I have been enjoying recently are Cadillac Desert and essay collections of Wendell Berry.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Dedicated this past year to serving with Americorps in my home town to a non-profit called Urban Roots. They are an urban teaching farm for kids from 5-12 and their mission is to grow healthy bodies, minds, and community and I was able to be apart of that by implementing season extension growing techniques here in the high desert to grow food year round.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm more than willing to teach and share a few things that I do know, such as knitting and fiber weaving, also any knowledge about plants. I LOVE to share the beauty of the desert with people unfamiliar with the terrain. I also enjoy sharing yoga experience with people, whether going to a class, trying to lead a flow, or just go through a practice together independently. I'm generally interested in learning any minimalist and primitive skills.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I love to cook! I'm vegetarian and love to cook up big filling meals. I would also love to share time with people and provide and exercise buddy, whether it's yoga or going for a jog. Along with my boyfriend I would love to help fix anything when it's needed.
