About Me

My name is Shelby and I'm 24 years old.
I'm pretty big on positivity.
I get too into television shows.
I'm really passionate about character development.
I find it hard to buy clothes that aren't black.
I have too many journals.
I have a thing for old keys and older houses.
I watch a lot of movies.
I take photos in my spare time.
I love, love, love to cook for other people.
I make a mean minestrone soup.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm looking to make the move from Norfolk to Portland at the end of this month (March). I'm finding that apartment hunting online is not only difficult, but kind of nerve-wracking since I can't really check anything out in person. I'm trying to score a job (or at least get some leads) before I head out there, and I'm here in hopes of finding someone who will lend me their couch / show me the ropes of Portland while I'm looking for something more permanent. Unfortunately, these plans mean I don't really have the spare cash to get myself verified. I am open to talking / answering any questions that need to be asked.

Interests

Writing (mostly young adult fiction/short stories), reading, photography, videography, coming-of-age movies, music...anything remotely related to art, honestly. Also people. People are fascinating.

Music, Movies, and Books

I range everywhere from Gregory Alan Isakov to Taylor Swift to Childish Gambino. I listen to a lot more songs than I do full albums, but some artists that reoccur are Tegan & Sara, Sea Wolf, Frightened Rabbit and Bad Suns.

Selma, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Stuck In Love, Julie & Julia, Easy A, Charlie Barlett are the first ones I can think of. I'll watch pretty much any movie.

My favorite book forever is The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, because I wouldn't be writing without it, but I have recently fallen in love with Maggie Stiefvater's The Raven Cycle.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I don't know if this qualifies as amazing, but I got out of a relationship that was really holding me down and I've felt better about myself every day since.

Teach, Learn, Share

From here on out, I am open to everything that comes my way.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I offer an open ear, an unbiased opinion and my cooking skills. Also sarcasm. Sometimes. I can also take your portrait and ask you some questions in video for my YouTube channel if you're down.
