Chi sono

CURRENT MISSION

To learn about others

ABOUT ME

I was born in New Orleans, had grade school in Latin America and highschool in India, and spent a year as an undergraduate (B.A. Newcomb [Tulane]) studying political theory at the L.S.E. At Cornell for my Ph.D., I studied Anthropology with James Siegel, Southeast Asia with Ben Anderson, and Social Anthropology with Victor Turner. I have done extended fieldwork in Papua-New Guinea, Indonesia, and Mexico. I spent a few months as a visitor at the A.N.U. in Canberra long ago, and more recently spent a sabbatical studying documentary film and multimedia at the Graduate School of Journalism at U.C.Berkeley.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am traveling abroad starting tomorrow and I would like to try couch surfing.

Interessi

I have always been drawn to the arts (plastic, photographic, moving images, and performance) and by technologies used to create, shape, and distribute them. In recent decades I has written on the discourses and markets for the arts and crafts of marginal peoples, and I continues that work in both writing and a bilingual documentary video currently (Fall 2011) in post-production, El Oficio del Arte / the Work of Art. I exhibit photographs and have illustrated scholarly works with humorous line drawings, and I am currently exploring documentary forms made possible by digital media and the WWW.
