About Me

I slow cook insights and knowledge. I also want to bring lots of humour and fun to others, generously, and get the same back.

I never like to self-describe so, at the risk of sounding rude, I'll let you work out what I'm like from the info on this page.

I like to delve into the nooks and crannies of places that I visit, and I like to collect funny little stories about seemingly ordinary streets and places in Hong Kong, stories about the everyday man or random events that actually say a lot about Hong Kong or that have shaped the city's history.

I've just returned to Hong Kong, after 8 months in Mexico, Guatemala and Cuba. I used to live in the UK for 13 years. I'd like to think that my time living abroad has given me the distance to appreciate all the glories, tragedies and oddities of Hong Kong more closely and humourously.

I love all things black and white, because I reduce everything in life to in-betweens.

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

Couchsurfed for the first time during a two-week holiday in Italy in Oct 2006. Also during a long weekend in Siena in Aug 2008, a break in the north of Portugal Nov 2008 and in Bucharest in May 2010 etc. Met and stayed with different sets of lovely people. Also made great friends from the weekly meet-ups in Hong Kong and Beijing. Couchsurfing works! All the people I had the fortune to meet are very friendly, interesting, genuine and generous.

Cooking, reading, visual arts, anthropology, urban lifestyles (eg. comparing Hong Kong/London/Macau/Taiwan etc), anything to do with Portugal or Lusophone cultures, postcards, writing, photograhy, going to parks and the countryside, cafes, cemeteries, horse racing and travelling of course.

One Amazing Thing I've Done

Perhaps the moment when I stood in front of La Garganta del Diablo (The Devil's Throat) at the Iguazu Falls in Argentina?

I was awe-struck, completely cowed; it's utterly stupendous, totally mesmerising. I don't know what's happening. I don't know what to say. Kiss the devil's lips, and the world stops.
