The Dutch East India Co. got the ball rolling for *value additive* innovation in finance (as opposed to value depletive finance which is what largely exists on Wall St today). The Dutch East India Co. was a necessary creation of its time for the Dutch to persevere as a people, as a culture, and as economic innovators but it snowballed into one creating the first real publicly traded company and got the capitalistic force rolling like none other in history.
