About Me

CURRENT MISSION

We are seeking to reacquaint ourselves with ... ... the thing that makes the leaves shiver. light, air, water, humans, thoughts, places, feelings. We want to be in the world and to be of service to it. We seek to be happy and to give.

ABOUT ME

We're crazy, off the beaten path, creative folks who would do anything for anyone. Good with kids. :) let's see...empathetic, diplomatic, gentle, friendly, some of us might be a little sarcastic, but, you know, in a good way, artistic, natural, emotional (but not 'dramatic') interesting, aware, serious, silly.

PHILOSOPHY

Children, creativity, life and doing good are the most important things. Thoughts and feelings, emotions, are huge. Let's see...tree huggers and vegetarians, but definitely not missionary about it. Some of us are probably pretty spiritual, but not in an organized religion sort of way. Open-minded and, basically, just very interested.
We're here to help, touch and connect, explore, learn, grow, find, feel, love and be.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

In couch surfing? I guess we are looking for couches to surf right now (we were renting and let the rental go for this trip.) We'd like someday to host because it sounds, very cool.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Well, we're new.

Interests

Books. Books books books. Trees. Anything green and living. Water. We're quite fond of water. The four of us like to read together, walk outside, explore. We're a little shy, but we're getting over that. Adam (The dad) is studying Baubotanik because it is ridiculously cool. We're all writers. Brinn (the youngest Grasshopper, aged 14) likes visual things, animals, colors, markets, cloth painting, cooking, city-based adventures. Ander (the oldest Grasshopper, 17) likes genetics, politics and revolutions, societies, quilting, good books and long hikes, outdoor adventures. I'm a dryad. We're a very tight-knit family, seeking to meet the world, write about it, help save it, experience it. Ooh, large boulders, also very cool. And morning sunlight. We might be considered a little boring, staid family-style folks, in that we haven't actually been anywhere yet (well, Washington State. New Jersey last summer...okay, I'm out.) and we don't drink particularly or party much. But we are just sparking with creativity, which is something, and we are very friendly with pretty much anything bigger than a...ok, everything. Let's see...novels with wizards or androids, geek stuff, sustainability, literacy, kids (oh, I'm a teacher and an 'aspiring scholar,' would love to fund our existence exploring the planet by writing or helping people...I create education reform curriculum; Adam discovered he writes in 2003, discovered he draws about two years ago, designs elf houses, cooks,) ...um, non-profits, education and...did I mention trees? We like people too. ...ooh, and colleges. And bookstores. & chocolate. And art supplies. And spices and colors... pebbles and cloths... and buildings. Oh, wind! Windstorms. Rain! Ink, nice pens...*stationary shops*... stone, in general. ...And...

Music, Movies, and Books

Favorite books besides one another's: The Elfstones of Shannara, The Blue Sword, My Ishmael, Anne of Green Gables, The Pern Series, Ender's Game, Gulliver's Fugitives (Terry Brooks, Robin McKinley, Anne McAffrey, Sharon Shinn, Christopher Stasheff, Keith Sharee, JRR Tolkein, David & Leigh Eddings, Piers Anthony, Orson Scott Card...)

Stories, we're fond of stories.

Sci-fi, but not gritty, YA that's well-written, fantasy, epic and not, picture books, documentaries and myths, legends and faerietales.

Star Wars (the classic 3 mostly,) Star Trek, The Last Starfighter, Short Circuit, ...

Music!
Adam likes: music generally, rock, 80's, passed down songs, singing.

Steph likes: music generally, rock, 80's, classical and random/new/exotic.

Ander: Likes everything from folk to melodic death metal, (with little interest in country and rap.) Artists such as Dar Williams, Opeth and Tool, Simon and Garfunkel.

Brinn likes: "all music except heavy metal, rap and country" ...& is new to overseas music.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

7 am. There's just something about the light.

Sitting on a giant boulder, it holds you and is simply too solid to ever let you go.

Kids. Kids are remarkable.

The sizzle of a new, creative idea over the skin is one of those awestruck things for me. I love the breathlessness of it.

Teach, Learn, Share

This is a cool concept. I like this bit a lot! We're learning about Baubotanik, happy to share as we do. I have some grant writing experience, but little grant research. We write, lots. I teach writing, and children. I teach SAT and ACT prep, have a pretty good background of information for people on college preparation and application and on job and volunteer hunting (at least in the states.) I know a little photoshop type graphics and have a small handful of tips graphic design/layout, marketing and PR (as an amateur also) and community relations and community and nonprofit organization. Education, schools, curriculum reform, authentic education. We have some sustainability and environmental science stuff behind us so we can connect people to links and info and interesting endeavors there...publishing also. English, of course. I sort-of remember a little french :). We'd like to learn about sustainability, baubotanik, german and Greek and Turkish and french and..., and dancing, photography and painting and architecture and...everything. We've made a cob oven, and helped with a cob building, but are by no means experts. We're great with teens who have interests we can offer support for too.
