About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To explore, to gain wisdom, to love God and people

ABOUT ME

Every since I was very young, I've wanted to travel the world and live in different places, and I'm having the privilege of living that dream. I've lived in southwestern Uganda since October 2010, training farmers in sustainable agriculture, and I've been able to travel to different countries in the region a fair bit. I'll be leaving this continent in September 2012, and I'm planning to backpack around Europe for roughly 3 months before heading home.

I like to do a job well. I see the value in planning ahead and know the need to be flexible and content when things go awry. I value healthy relationships over being "right." I don't care much for small talk, though I realize friendships often must begin there. I like to go deeper. I don't ever wish to stop learning, and I try to apply what I learn to living a good life. I think I can learn from just about anyone.

I love hearing people's stories. I love cooking, esp. learning to make new things and the feeling I get when make a good meal for a group of friends. I love words, spoken and written, that are beautiful and say what a person means. I'm fascinated by languages (I hope to learn many) and culture, and by losing myself in a new city or wilderness and finding something I didn't expect. I enjoy running and exercise and tired muscles from hard work well done.

Finally, I'm defined my Christian faith. It has brought me here to Uganda and set me free to live a full life I never could have conceived of. Ask me about it anytime.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am brand new to CouchSurfing, and I'd love to get to know the community here in Uganda and East Africa. I'm also looking forward to CSing in Europe later this year. Once I return home and get my living situation sorted, I would love to host others. Sadly I'm unable to do so at present.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

None yet, (see above) but looking forward to many good times!

Interests

I'm fascinated by nature, both its outward beauty and the details of its inner workings. I love what I do because I believe it's possible for human beings and the environment to flourish together, and I'm always looking for ways to achieve that. I love the art of many cultures and time periods and architecture, both historic and new. I'm particularly interested in sustainable cities, and I'm eager to learn about their design. I'm a big reader. I love classics, from Hemingway to Joseph Conrad and Tolkien, but I'm not beyond enjoying the Hunger Games or Harry Potter. I can spend hours playing guitar, and I listen to classical and jazz, Mumford and Sons and the Swell Season, the Avett Brothers and Lisa Hannigan, among others. There's more, but suffice it to say, I try to find something interesting in everything.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Visiting a remote area of South Sudan and encountering the most severe poverty and human need I've ever seen.

Whitewater rafting on the Nile river. Being carried along by such power was indescribably amazing.

Teach, Learn, Share

Agriculture, especially no-till, mulch-based methods designed for developing communities. Some guitar skills and physical training experience.

Countries I’ve Visited

Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania

Countries I’ve Lived In
