Hi! I'm an Assistant Language Teacher in Minamisoma, Fukushima, although I'm originally from beautiful New Zealand in the central North Island. Back in the day I studied Journalism and Management Communications, I've worked as a journalist and a comms person for various social change and non-profit NGOs in Auckland.
Right now, I'm focused on practicing Japanese and I'm also teaching myself to code! I also love video games, knitting, blogging, hiking and generally getting out and experiencing as much life as I can.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
So far, I have only surfed! But I love the connections that can form between strangers, especially those with open hearts. Backpackers and travelers are such interesting people and I just want to meet as many of them as I can!
I have two sides. One side is all about getting into EVERYTHING, going on adventures and talking to ALL THE PEOPLE, trying ALL THE THINGS. The other side spends hours tinkering away on the piano, coding, or playing Steam games.
- deep conversations
- social change
Music, Movies, and Books
Music-wise, I lean toward prog/experimental rock and symphonic metal. Current faves are Ne Obliviscaris, Leprous, Opeth and Haken, but my stalwarts are Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree. Pretty much anything by Steve Wilson, to be honest. Autoheart and Passenger when I'm feeling poppy/folksy, oh and I can blast out most of Hamilton, including Guns and Ships... :p
Favourite movies? What We Do In The Shadows and Hunt For The Wilderpeople are up there, The Boat That Rocked, Shaun of the Dead et al, Les Intouchables, Moana, Singin' in the Rain... it's a mix!
I read a lot of fantasy. I love Neil Gaiman and Robin Hobb, but I've recently been getting into Haruki Murikami, so there's that. I don't read as much as I used to, unfortunately.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Earlier this year, I climbed Fuji-san! Does that count?
Teach, Learn, Share
I love sharing! I can tell you some stories, or teach some funky rhythms, or songs... I can teach you to knit, if you like! :p
What I Can Share with Hosts
I'm a bubbly person who loves to talk and loves to listen. If you want to stay up until 2am discussing the intricacies of life and the universe, I'm down. Conversely if you like your own space, all good. I can look after myself perfectly well. I can whip up some food to say thank you for letting me stay, or offer my thanks in interpretive dance... (Okay, I've never done that, but why not start now?) and generally provide some laughs and banter!
