I once met a Frenchman while travelling and he was just absolutely fascinating. He had told me of his whereabouts prior to my meeting him and I assure you, you will not be disappointed.
He traversed the plains of the Russian Far East by means of the Trans-Siberian Railway. This unforgiving and desolate land unfurled in front of him; and I can't imagine what he had seen. Perhaps a serene whiteness gracing the reticent prairies or quivering grasses dancing in the summer breeze.
He stopped at a junction in Ulan-Ude, still very deep in Siberia, and wound down towards Ulaan Baatar. From Mongolia, he found his way into Southern China with a short tangent to meet a friend in Japan. He continued across Indochina and laboured in Bali until he earned enough for Darwin. And from Darwin, he found himself in Melbourne talking in this unbelievably modest accent to a wide-eyed traveller who just arrived a few hours before from San Francisco by ways of Auckland.
A few days later, he left by boat to Tasmania. He graciously gave me a slip of paper with his email and that was that.
I always had this character in my mind. And Alexandre satisfied those ambitions of my character: to be a traveller, to meet new people, to learn from experiences abroad, and to tell stories.
Those few days that university allots for students, I plan to take full advantage of them. Indeed, I am a student.
I am young, but old enough to know that life should be grasped. I don't want to realize in the future that my youthful spirit was suppressed by my inactivity. How awful!
Loosen up. Tell stories. Share. Be nice to everybody and everything.
