About Me

** PLEASE!! **
I cannot accept your request, if you want to arrive before mid-August, I am sorry. At the moment I'm still busy moving around until my flat is ready and then I'll be in the U.S. for two weeks. If that's okay for you, then continue:

Dada is mus(s), da kann kommen, was wolle. Baumwolle. I'm the ghostwriter for the Harry Potter series, Banksy and the inventor of the George Foreman grill.

In all seriousness: From Austria, but I've spent a lot of my time in "exile" now already (London, Oxford & Paris) making this whole identity thing even more complicated. Wrote my Master's thesis while backpacking through Europe (applied mathematics), ended up settling in Paris (such an amazing city!), but now I'm kind of wrapping things up to move back to London.

I like to think I did a lot of things in my life already! At the moment, during the day, I do "researchy" stuff based on mathematics. For example, in my next job it'll be disease and disaster response (outbreaks, hurricanes, etc. - not planning them, but responding to them when those things happen) and/or possibly some other things I can tell you more about over a pint, if you're interested!

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

Too late to quit now!

I hardly remember stuff about places, whereas I remember all the people I've met, especially people who are going places .. in whatever way.

Everything literate, thoughtful and somewhere in the middle between science, philosophy and art. :)

Music, Movies & Books

Books: In terms of non-fiction, Hesse, Wallace (must watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CrOL-ydFMI), Tartt and some usual (depending on where in life you are I guess?) suspects like Kafka, Murakami and Kundera. Otherwise Dawkins, Hitchens, Deutsch, Steven Pinker and many others. I always quite like German poetry (Mascha Kaléko, Erich Kästner, Ron Winkler, ..) but I have yet to find people who know German! :)

Music: Parov Stelar, Soap & Skin (yay, Austrian bands!), Caravan Palace and Zoe Kaeting are quite dear to my heart. :) If I want to sound a little more hipster / pretentious, I'd also say a bit of Jazz and/or classical music. Oh, and Chilly Gonzales, Tiersen, Zimmer, Einaudi and Hisaishi. Or https://soundcloud.com/bhuemer

Movies: My dinner with André, Grizzly Man, Chinatown, Into the wild, Annie Hall, Risse im Beton, Once, Up, Requiem of a Dream, Shatter Island, Amour, Oktober November, The Pianist, The Shawshank Redemption, The Thin Red Line, Dans la maison, Spirited Away, Before Sunrise, Before Midnight and so on and so forth. :)

One Amazing Thing I've Done

I grew up in the country side in Austria, which - in case there's still non-believers out there - is a stunning place (see here: https://vimeo.com/121649600 and here: https://vimeo.com/59981585). Then after graduating from school, the first time I went to London was to pick up keys for my new flat. It might not be that amazing, but I loved the contrast of going from 8000 people in your town to 8 million.

Teach, Learn, Share

I have the incredible ability to be as naive as a child. If you want, I can teach you! :)

Countries I've Visited

Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland

Countries I've Lived In

Austria, France, United Kingdom
