About Me

I don't really take a great interest in trying to describe myself as self-narrativization mostly ends up in mythomania. Above all, I believe in the strength of endurance and positivity in life and I like to think of myself as a person with a profound interest in my surroundings and the people who cross my path.

...in spite of occasional bouts of healthy cynicism, of course.

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

Over the years, I've surfed more than I've hosted and I would like to change those stakes. As I'm quite happy with the place I'm staying in now and considering the ample amount of space it offers to guests, I'm more than happy to repay my dues and accommodate the willing wanderer, harboring you with a roof over your head or just as a lunch- or coffee date to orient you around Antwerp and make you feel right at home. I'm sickeningly nice most of the time so you'll be okay.

Up until now it has been quite wonderful and I'm grateful for having met such lovely people.

I keep busy with writing on film on platforms such as http://www.photogenie.be/photogenie_blog/search/node/vanity%20celis, http://www.supercalifragilistic.be/author/vace/ and http://www.cultreviews.com/, have a weakness for anything vintage and secretly wish I could have lived somewhere between the period of 1920-1970. I love hanging out with friends, visiting museums, preying around flea markets, burning my eyes in screening rooms, travelling to just about anywhere and having long inspired talks over too much tea, coffee and cigarettes.

Music, Movies & Books

Movies: I've probably seen more films than is considered healthy for any human being and I enjoy almost everything ranging from silent film to the Golden Age of Hollywood to the subversive and modernist and exploitation cinema of the sixties and seventies. I have a special fondness for Czech New Wave Cinema and could tell you a thing or two about horror films. I dig visionary cinema that doesn't withhold from crossing the boundary between what is considered to be high art and cult and kitsch.

Music: mostly electronic dreamscapes and I've acquired quite a fondness for exotica and jazz. Anything with sitars and an oriental or a psychedelic vibe will be immediately appreciated as well.

Favorite authors include but are not limited to Gogol, Anais Nin, Colette, Angela Carter, Bruno Schulz, Truman Capote, Jose Donoso, Kundera, Roland Barthes, Fitzgerald, Cocteau and Unica Zurn. I love the phantasmagoric, the uncanny and the grotesque, experiments with form and the beauty of artifice. Also into reading about film theory and film criticism.

One Amazing Thing I've Done

I've recently met Tobe Hooper. Sitting across the man who directed Texas Chainsaw Massacre while eating a piece of pastry he gloatingly commented on as 'that pie is getting eaten alive!' is a memory for the ages.
