Über mich

CURRENT MISSION

We live in a very big, very beautiful and very exciting world and I believe we should experience as much of it as possible while we are here.

ABOUT ME

Hey surfers! So, I grew up in London, Ontario, Canada (located about half-way between Toronto and Detroit). I've got a twin sister. I studied Film & Philosophy at the University of Western Ontario. And, I love traveling!About a month after graduating university, I landed in Tokyo and taught English for a year-and-a-half, ate loads of sushi and sang more karaoke than is humanly possible. After saying sayonnara to Japan, I spent a year in Queensland, Australia, working and SCUBA diving while trying to soak up as much of the beautiful weather as I could. I then spent two years living in Korea, gorging myself on Korean BBQ and learning to love soju and kimchi. After leaving Korea, I decided to return to Canada for a year, studied screenwriting at Vancouver Film School and just kicked back in the Pacific Northwest. Almost as soon as I finished film school, however, on an invitation from a friend, I returned to Asia and spent two years working in Shanghai, PRC. Shanghai was definitely my favorite place to live!In between, I've been lucky enough to visit loads of other great places. Some of my favorites are the desert in Rajasthan (India), Kyoto and Nara (Japan), Saint Petersburg (Russia) and Halong Bay (Vietnam). If you love coffee, make sure you visit Vietnam at least once in your life! These days, I'm back in Canada getting ready to fly to Buenos Aires in early January 2012 to start a 4 - 5 month journey around Argentina, Chile, Boliva, Peru, Ecuador and Columbia! If you're going to be in South America in 2012 or if you want to know more about any of the places I've lived/visited, just drop me a line!!!

PHILOSOPHY

As my mission states, we live in a very big, very beautiful and very exciting world and I believe we should see as much of it as we can while we are here.

Also, here are a few quotes from other people which have inspired me:

"There is always something waiting at the end of the road. If you're not willing to see what it is, you probably shouldn't be out there in the first place." ~ Andrew Kevin Walker

"Never save anything for the swim back." ~ Andrew Niccol

"To give food is to give love. When you give someone food, you provide them with sustenance. To provide sustenance is provide life. And the purest expression of love is the gift of life." ~ Unknown

Warum ich bei Couchsurfing bin

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I'm a first-time couch surfer!

Interessen

I love trying new things, especially food. Of course, I love hiking, camping, going for walks and exploring new places. When I'm not outside, I'm probably watching a movie, listening to music, playing the guitar or sleeping. I also try to support the local football (soccer) team wherever I live!

Musik, Filme und Bücher

I'm a big movie lover. If I had to narrow it down to just three DVDs to take to a desert island, I'd have to go with Casablanca, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Fitzcarraldo.

Music-wise, Leonard Cohen is my personal hero. Sex, love, coming of age... it's all there. I listen to a lot of movie soundtrack music as well. Some of my favorite composers are Alexandre Desplat and Gustavo Santaolalla. My current favorite, on perpetual repeat on my MP3 player these days, is a classical guitarist from Montenegro named Milos Karadaglic. Oh, and so I don't sound too, too serious, Arcade Fire and Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes are pretty great, as well!

To be honest, when I read, I usually read screenplays rather than books, however, I'm currently reading Teach Yourself Latin American Spanish and a bunch of books about traveling in South America! =p

Eine tolle Erfahrung, die ich gemacht habe

In December of 2006, a fishing boat struck a Chinese oil tanker just off Taean beach on the west coast of Korea spilling millions of gallons of oil into the water (and onto the beach). While this was obviously a horrible ecological disaster, being there and being able to participate in helping with the clean-up effort was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had.

The most amazing place I have ever seen was Cut Bank Pass/Pitamaken Pass while on a week-long back-country trek around Glacier National Park in Montana, USA. The fear of being up so high combined with the overwhelming beauty of the surrounding landscape was by far the closest I have every come to experiencing true awe.

Lehren, lernen, teilen

I'm really interested in reading more non-fiction, essays and biographies. I would also like to learn more about farming and how we cultivate food from the Earth.
