About Me

The world is like a book. Those who do not travel, read only one page

Johann(1964) and Karina(1968). Age is misleading - one is as young as you believe. I always say a person's best 10-years are between 49 and 50. We live in Mafikeng, Northwest Province, South Africa. I practice as an architect and my wife is a somotologist. We have two daughters (architect & accountant) who have "flown the nest". We are non-smokers, have sober habits and not party animals. Though Christian ourselves, we believe in tolerance and acceptance of others' views and believes and are friends with people from different races and religions. One of our strong believes are - love others like yourself and do to them as you would like them to do unto you. Isn't that's what CS is about? We have visited various countries before in Africa, Europe and Asia. We believe CS to be a wonderful opportunity to meet local people, learn about other cultures, experience the "authentic" world as well as making travelling more affordable. We enjoy meeting local people and have build lasting relationships with people in Holland, Cairo, Cyprus, Israel and Germany. Looking forward hearing from all of you out there. Also members of SERVAS South Africa.

"No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite." ~ Nelson Mandela

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Surfing and hosting. Have received valuable information about places we are planning to visit. We have also provided CS's with info about our area, province and country from a perspective different to that portrait in the media. South Africa is a great country!

We have "surfed" locally as well as in Internationally under both CS & SERVAS organisations. We met a wonderful taxi driver in Cairo. Met up with Architects in Istanbul and from Cyprus. We made wonderful friends and had the opportunity to return the favor when we again hosted our surfer-friends in SA. We enjoy communicating with potential hosts and surfers. So far we have had a wonderful experience communicating through CS.

Here are some international contacts from non-CS's, whom you may contact for additional references on us - please DO NOT contact them for a couch as they are not "official" CS hosts. We met up with these people on references from other personal contacts:

Raafat - Cairo Taxi driver - Met up on 3 separate trips to Cairo to date, we visited his home and shared a few meals together, also with his family. If you need TRANSPORT IN CAIRO, contact them. Raafat has unfortunately past away, but his son continues with the taxi service including meeting you at and returning you to the airport. They will drive you wherever you need to go . Absolutely wonderful people. -

Cor & Elsa - Groningen, Netherlands - Surfed with them in 2009 and hosted them on 2 occasions in South Africa -

Simonette - Traveled together, surfed with her in Amsterdam in 2009 and hosted her in South Africa in 2011 -

Maurice - Utrecht - Hosted him in South Africa in 2011 and surfed with him and his family in Nederland in 2013.

Els - Wolwega, Netherlands - Surfed with her in Netherlands in 2009 and again treated her to a meal when she visited our town the following year -

Radek Šubrt - Surfed with the Šubrt family in 2013 and hosted Radek in 2016 when he traveled SA.

Can - Istanbul - An architect we met for drinks and a tour around modern Istanbul 2011 -

Theo - Nicosia - An architect with whom we spend numerous hours while he was in South Africa -

And many other SERVAS members in Israel, Austria, Czech, France, Belgium, England, etc. Feel free if you require contact details.
