About Me

ride clinical trials all the way to my trip round europe

I am a chronic shifter who can't stay attached to one idea of what to do with the rest of my life for longer than a few months. I'm pursuing a degree in journalism right now to satiate the part of me that enjoys writing and quiet the part of me that doesn't want to be an English teacher. One advantage being so flighty has, though, is being perpetually excited to travel and meet all kinds of new people, so I suppose there's that.

I really believe in the healing power of absurdity and whimsical silliness, which is a phrase stolen verbatim and unashamedly from a friend of mine. I'm quite political, but I try not to discuss it in polite conversation.

The main thing to know about me, I think, is that I'm a very curious sort of person who is up to try most anything at least once.

Cynicism and apathy are infectious diseases that corrupt everything they touch. It's better to be perceived as naive and foolish than to let oneself become jaded and disillusioned. I live my life to experience as much the world has to offer as I can fit in before I shuffle off the mortal coil, whether good or bad.

I try to stick to that, anyway.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Being a poor student, I can't offer much in the way of hosting, but if you're in Gillingham and need somewhere to stay, you're more than welcome to the floor of my flat.

Only in surfing at my friend's and letting him surf here in return. I'm excited to get some actual experience, though!

Writing, reading, feminism, political activism, journalism, fiction, travelling, comedy and not taking life too seriously.

I love music and theatre and music theatre. I like singing songs from musicals obnoxiously loudly when I think I'm alone.

I read like a mad thing and prefer transgressive fiction, though I have been known to dabble in Captain Underpants.

I find art very therapeutic, but can draw about as well as I can sing. So if you can imagine yowling cats transmuted onto canvas, you just about have my talents.

Possibly one of my favourite pass-times is rambling along through country and cities and finding interesting things to look at/explore.

And I also like writing facetious letters and have been an accomplice to several thefts of amusing signs.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like a lot of music and literature that would make a lot of people think of me as a terribly pretentious human being (if my profile hasn't already convinced you of that), so to make up for it I enjoy really, really bad movies. Give me The Room or Megashark Versus Giant Octopus over Citizen Kane any day.

Books: American Psycho, The Rules of Attraction, The Bell Jar, John Dies at the End, Heroes and Villains, The Bloody Chamber, The Picture of Dorian Gray, A Clockwork Orange, Flowers for Algernon, The Time Traveller's Wife, The Lovely Bones, and I, Lucifer.

Music: Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Murray Gold, Ben Foster, Hans Zimmer, Jerry Goldsmith, The Decemberists, Beethoven, Florence and the Machine, Fiona Apple, Tim Minchin, First Aid Kit, Voltaire, Scissor Sisters, Franz Ferdinand, Just Jack, Placebo, Mother Mother, Muse.

Movies: The Room, Megashark Versus Giant Octopus, Tales from the Crypt, The Shawshank Redemption, Batman Forever, Dead Poets Society, Four Lions, Yes Man, the Hannibal trilogy.

Musicals: Bare, Next to Normal, Chess in Concert, Shrek the Musical, Chicago, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Glory Days, Matilda, Repo! The Genetic Opera, Wicked, RENT, The Book of Mormon.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Probably the most memorable thing I've done is visit the Houses of Parliament on a tour. The artwork and architecture in those buildings really is breathtaking.

Teach, Learn, Share

I know quite a lot about the media industry and can write shorthand, which is kind of fun to learn. I also run the LGBT society at my university campus, so there's that!

As for what I'd like to learn - I'm not sure. I'm really open in my interests. But I guess I would really appreciate some lessons in the Russian or Ukrainian languages.
