About Me

I'll be traveling in Europe from late April to October this year, other than Spain, no fixed plans as yet.

All about me is mostly about the sea. I've been around boating all of my life, from growing up around lakes and rivers in Michigan, to learning to sail and buying a boat in San Francisco in the mid-70's. After spending 20 some years in California, San Francisco Bay Area and Newport Beach, I moved to St. Maarten/St. Martin in 1994 where I opened a yacht dealership.

I left St. Maarten in 2004 and have been sailing around the Caribbean since that time. About a year ago I was asked to run the marina at Fantasy Island Resort. I've now completed the year and am taking a leave of absence for 4 months of travel.

My interest are all things near, on, above and below the ocean, including fishing, kayaking, snorkeling, swimming, and just lazing about the beach. I'm a voracious reader, 2-3 books per week of all sorts, enjoy surfing the net (my source of news and information), socializing with friends old and new. Television holds little interest for me, though I do watch both American & the rest of the world football.

I also enjoy visiting historical places, museums, castles, art museums, hiking, biking, meeting new friends. In short, I enjoy most things life has to offer.

I'm a pretty happy guy, don't let much bother me. After surviving over a dozen hurricanes I've learned not to sweat the small stuff. I most enjoy people that are intelligent and have a good sense of humor and are able to laugh at the world and themselves. I'm neither religious nor "spiritual", (which means many things to different people), but am dedicated to the Golden Rule.

There is more, of course, but enough for now. Perhaps some day we'll have a chance to explore more?

But wait! There's more! Since completing my original profile, I've been fortunate enough to begin a relationship with a wonderful Australian woman. Her name is Anne, she's an absolute delight to be with and an accomplished sailor to boot! She's 51, a retired special ed teacher. I'll be posting more & photos soon.

I live my life for the simple enjoyment.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Have not been able to host anyone as yet but have responded to a number of emails with information. I did meet a fellow surfer recently, he is here on the island staying with another surfer. Spent an enjoyable (at least for me!) hour with him, mostly picking his brain about his experiences with CS. A well traveled guy with loads of information.

Update: I spent time with two delightful host during my trip to Europe last year, one in Portsmouth, U.K. and the other in Riga, Latvia. Both exceptional people!

I've still not hosted due to travels and working on the interior of my boat, but looking forward to the opportunity. I've continued to help all I can with information on Roatan and Honduras.

Music, Movies, and Books

My taste in all are eclectic, kind of like my taste in food. I like everything but liver. I particularly like British humor - thank you BBC and PBS - and am fond of Inspector Morse.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Bunches, but the first thing that comes to mind is getting whacked by Hurricane Ivan in Grenada. I was aboard my boat when Ivan hit, thinking I was well prepared. But I was not prepared for getting hit by another boat which knocked me down and off my anchors and moorings. I came close, VERY close, to loosing not only my boat but my life and that of my partner at the time.
