Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I have hosted several people in my home in Guam and met a few couch-surfers passing through Guam, but I have not yet couch-surfed as a guest. I first learned about Couchsurfing from a TIME magazine article on alternative travel and it looked like a great idea, although my enthusiasm was tempered when I started getting CS requests from people who had just landed in Guam and couldn't find a cheap hotel and were msg'ing me from a wi-fi spot on the beach and begging for a free place to crash. I stopped accepting guests for a couple of years after that. If you aren't considerate enough to plan your visit and make your request a few weeks in advance, you don't belong on Couchsurfing. Couchsurfing is not about finding last-minute crash pads for free.
I love long improv roadtrips in countries and places I haven't seen. I enjoy hiking, outdoor photography, exploring museums and art galleries. I like to cook, trying to replicate dishes that I've had in restaurants. I love staying up late and reading and forgetting the time. I enjoy watching films on DVD while trying to row another 5 miles on my rowing machine. I can't stand smoke-filled bars, karaoke, loud parties, and attending sports events like basketball, football, or baseball.
