Seated at the foot of the snowcapped Atlas Mountains, Marrakech is an incredible old-world city in beautiful natural surroundings. The heart of Marrakech is the medina, the old fortified city packed with vendors and eateries, bordered by 19 kilometres of high walls. Visitors can be swept away by local tradition by visiting a souq (or market) for some classic Moroccan spices, carpets, or decorative slippers that are a trademark of fashion here. To get a feel for Marrakech’s unique architecture, check out the Koutoubia Mosque, the Bahia Palace, and the Saadian Tombs. A short trip out of the city can take you to great hiking and incredible views in the Atlas Mountains or an exotic camel ride in the Sahara Desert.
Marrakech’s food scene is not to be missed. Sample a local specialty like a tajine, slow-cooked in hot ashes, or a traditional soup made with lamb, lentils, chickpeas, and tomato paste seasoned with a classic blend of spices. To top off any meal, try a cup of freshly-brewed tea, made with care from the some of the finest tea leaves in the world and served with fresh mint.
