sotory aboute one woman.n 1997, when my mom planned our month-long family trip to Europe, she relied largely on the library and the travel agency to help book hotels and map out our itinerary. Fast forward to 2013, people no longer need to leave their house to plan and finalize a trip. We are able to find online reviews that give us a picture of locales ranging from swanky five-star hotels to hidden coffee shops. And if we wanted to have a more unconventional experience, we could even browse through online profiles of potential hosts who would offer their couch or even a nicely furnished room for travelers.

None of this would be possible without lower communication and transaction costs, a participatory culture driven by a gift economy, and properties that combine interests-driven and people-oriented online communities together.
